Role description

As an Associate Ecologist, you will join our team of over 50 ecologists, who have more than 30 years of experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments, as well as the provision of advice on soil, land use, hydrological and sustainable drainage issues, arboriculture, ecosystem service, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies and metrics and cultural heritage. Over 2,000 projects were undertaken across the UK, Europe and beyond for public and private clients.

We are engaged on projects ranging from Urban and Greenfield Residential Development, Highway and Rail Schemes, Power Stations, Electrical and Gas Infrastructure. Clients include EDF Energy, Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Natural Resources Wales (NRW), National Grid, the Environment Agency, Transport for London, Highways England, Network Rail, the Canal and River Trust, Housing Associations and Local Authorities. We also handle international work via Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessments and our Natural Capital Community of Practice.

Role accountabilities

As an Associate Technical Director, you will lead and manage delivery of projects to meet time, budgetary, and SHEQ targets; manage ecological aspects of the client relationship; and provide technical advice and leadership. You will assist in personal development and mentoring under industry‑recognised technical leaders.

  • Lead projects, especially budgets and cashflow, and support the Team Leader in day‑to‑day running of the team.
  • Take responsibility for technical quality and approval of project deliverables.
  • Undertake ecological surveys and oversee analysis of field survey results.
  • Manage and/or produce Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), impact assessments, biodiversity strategies and other documentation.
  • Provide advice on ecological issues within your expertise and on a broad range of issues.
  • Compile licence applications, including mitigation and monitoring strategies.
  • Undertake and supervise mitigation and monitoring of licensed work and liaise with statutory authorities.
  • Perform performance management of assigned team members and provide training at staff meetings and to smaller groups.
  • Design research projects and contribute to best practice development for training and survey standards.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Excellent commercial and project management skills for a range of project sizes.
  • Detailed knowledge of ecological principles, biodiversity metrics, relevant environmental and ecological impact assessment (EcIA) legislation, policy and guidance.
  • In-depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups and appropriate field survey skills.
  • Proven track record in drafting and delivering PEAs, BNG assessments, EcIAs and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements that have been consented.
  • Proven track record in writing project and/or plan‑level Habitat Regulation Assessments (HRAs).
  • Proven experience of bid production and client interaction.
  • Experience leading a team.
  • Hold survey and/or mitigation/conservation licences.
  • Experience in design and compliance of biosecurity and health and safety protocols.
  • Hold a relevant degree, ideally with a further education qualification.
  • Chartered Environmentalist/Ecologist (or demonstrably approaching Chartered Ecologist).
  • Full member of CIEEM.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
