Job description

You understand general practice, and can appreciate the benefits (for both the patients and you) of working at a practice where personal lists and continuity of care have been embedded for many years. You enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and would like to join a practice where patients feel we have “very informative medical professionals*” who are “willing to listen*” and “from reception to Doctor, everyone is appreciated for their smiles, patience, and attention *”.

(*Friends and Family Test feedback June-November 2025.)

We have 2 roles available:

  • From mid-February 2026, we will have a permanent Associate GP role available, as one of our colleagues goes off to pursue other healthcare adventures.
  • One of our fabulous team is off on maternity leave until from mid-March 2026 until October 2026, and we need a happy and committed GP to look after her patients whilst she’s away. This will be a 6-month fixed term contract initially, but opportunities may arise to extend it into a permanent role.

Both roles are for 4 sessions per week. It is likely that the sessional pattern for the maternity cover role will be Tuesday AM, Wednesday PM and Friday AM & PM; and it is likely that the permanent role will have a sessional pattern of Monday AM & PM, Wednesday PM and Thursday AM. Both roles will definitely require you to work a Wednesday PM session, but there may be some flexibility with the other sessions.

If you are someone who wants to:

  • Genuinely get to know your patients so you can provide the best possible care
  • Be an active part of the effective running of the practice
  • Benefit from a well-established multi-disciplinary team including pharmacists, first contact physios, health and wellbeing coaches and social prescribers
  • Contribute to a high-functioning PCN that is making a real difference to the services we provide to patients, and has recently expanded to 3 practices; and
  • Be part of a practice where the staff wellbeing is a real thing and not just words (as shown by the staff wellbeing committee which has arranged a full advent calendar of events for December) and all GPs meet every day at 12.15pm

then maybe one of these positions is for you?

The permanent role is subject to a 6 month probation period.

Kindly include a detailed covering letter with your CV to explain why you think you would fit well at Horfield Health Centre and which role(s) you are applying for.

PLEASE NOTE: interviews for the role will take place on 27 & 28.01.2026. Virtual interviews will be an option if required.

Duties

The successful applicants will work with a team of 16 other GPs and over 60 practice and PCN colleagues at Horfield Health Centre providing primary care services (PMS contract) to around 18,400 patients across Horfield, Lockleaze and the surrounding areas.

Main responsibilities

  • Acute and chronic medical care of patients (and providing cross-cover for a ‘buddy’ GP) between 8.00am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday and at other times when the practice complies with its enhanced access obligations. Patient contact may be via email, phone, video, consultation at the surgery or home visits at any appropriate time throughout the working day.
  • Share the clinical management and administration duties in the practice (e.g. leading some of the practice’s clinical quality programmes).
  • Participate in the practice’s and your own individual performance management programme.
  • Promote effective working relationships and communication within the practice.
  • Maintain your own professional development (by demonstrating that you are an accomplished self-directed learner, and sharing your learning with others where appropriate).
  • Make effective use of the various information and technology systems in the practice, to include the consistent and accurate entering of data and use of read codes on the practice’s patient care system, EMIS Web.
  • Contribute to the practice’s team learning, teaching and research programmes as required.
  • Attend management, training and staff meetings as required. Some meetings may occur on days that the doctor does not usually work.
  • Work within all relevant practice policies and procedural guidelines
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times, on all matters relating to patients and staff in accordance with current data protection legislation.
  • Any other relevant duties that may be required from time to time.
Person specification

Ideally, we would like to appoint someone who:

  • Shows evidence of a breadth and depth of clinical knowledge and skills, is able to deal with people in a professional manner even when under pressure, and demonstrates strong inter-personal and communication skills
  • Is flexible and likes to work within a team, and take personal responsibility to make themselves an amenable, compatible and effective team member.
  • Has passed the membership exam of the Royal College of General Practitioners, is accredited as a GP by the GMC, and is registered on the NHS National Performer’s list
  • Has recent experience working as a GP in the UK, either as Partner, salaried doctor, locum GP or GP Trainee; is an enthusiast for general practice; and is committed to life‑long learning and has a positive attitude to continuous quality improvement. Has a ‘can‑do’ attitude.
  • Has a driving licence and car.
Terms and Conditions

Hours: Working 4 sessions per week, with a precise session pattern to be agreed. The working day is usually between 8.30am and 6.30pm weekdays, with a proportionate share of the enhanced access obligations (for Tuesday/Thursday evenings and Saturdays).

Salary: £11,308 per session per annum.

Start dates: mid-February 2026 for permanent role and mid-March 2026 for the fixed‑term role.

  • Company events
  • Company pension
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • On‑site parking
