Team overview

Operating across the construction industry, the Ashurst ContentiousConstruction practice has a track record of representing parties insubstantial and highly complex disputes worldwide. Working closelywith Ashurst's market leading projects and real estate teams, weassist clients on issues arising on substantial projects in the power,utilities, energy, transport, social infrastructure, and real estatesectors. The close working relationship between the disputes team andour transactional colleagues provides an 'end to end' project solutionfor clients from procurement, negotiation, contracting and delivery,to risk mitigation, and ultimately to adjudication, arbitration and litigation.

The UK team is primarily based in London but has two members inGlasgow and is looking to expand the Glasgow team in response toclient demand.

Job overview
  • You will already have acquired some dispute resolution knowledgeand have knowledge of the construction industry. You will be able tocontribute to professional development and know-how and participatein training where appropriate.
  • You will take day to day responsibility for more straightforwardmatters and actively progress complex matters. You will be able todemonstrate well-developed drafting skills.
  • You will be confident and effective in negotiations with counterparts.
  • You will be effective in communicating with clients in order tounderstand their needs and how best to meet them. You will also havethe ability to assist clients in arriving at practical andcost-effective solutions. You will actively seek to identifypersonnel within the client whom you should get to know and beeffective in forming those relationships.
  • You will take on a significant role within the team on complexmatters and be able to lead the team on smaller matters. You will beable to identify when a team member needs support and will beapproachable for advice, giving regular and constructive feedback.
  • You will understand the way our business, competitors and clientsare developing and work with the business development team to usethis information to develop business opportunities. You will buildand maintain a network of business contacts. In addition, you willproactively identify opportunities to introduce your clients toother offices and practice areas, working intelligently withpartners, other lawyers, and the business development team toexploit opportunities.
  • You will have excellent attention to detail, identifyinginconsistencies that indicate problems with quality of work or amisunderstanding of clients' needs.
  • You will gather information from a variety of sources to identifyyour own strengths and weaknesses. You will mentor and assist juniorassociates to promote their learning and development.
Essential skills and experience
  • English or Scots qualified with relevant post-qualificationexperience at a law firm with expertise in the UK construction sector.
  • Experience of disputes work, with a focus on the construction andinfrastructure sector in the UK.
  • Wider commercial disputes experience would be an advantage but not essential.
  • A proactive team-player who can work effectively with colleaguesat all levels with the confidence to drive tasks forward under supervision.
  • Client facing experience and the ability to understand and respondeffectively to client needs.
  • A commercial approach.
