Our Role
The Assistant Technologist will work across LWC Clothing. In addition, this role will assist with administration and legislation requirements to support growth, new markets, compliancy, and regulatory needs. This role also enables working cross‑functionally with the design, buying and merchandising teams to ensure we deliver quality products which are legal, safe and compliant in various markets.
What you'll be doing
Product Development
- Determining care labelling and testing requirements, communicating these to the supplier as required.
- Review products, comment on construction, fit, finish, and legal/safety compliance to ensure products are fully approved prior to customer delivery. Define construction parameters, by working closely with designer, buyer and supplier ensuring that products are adequately protected through to customer delivery. Manage Knitwear All categories, Toddler Sleepwear Boys, Girls, Unisex and Baby Sleepwear.
- Communicate with supplier, ensuring that samples are produced to required standards, assist in resolving technical challenges, escalating to Head of department when required.
- Prepare and update product tech packs, measurement charts, and fit comments in line with grade rules.
- Support factories with workbook submissions, proto/size sets, and sample approval flow.
- Monitor and report product returns and customer feedback.
- Manage business Critical Path information in collaboration with buying team, ensuring deadlines are met and any risks are raised early.
- Determine and define new standards as needs dictate, always ensuring that customer expectations are continuously met.
- Ensure technical specifications, reviews, test reports and relevant correspondence are filed appropriately, so that traceability exists, demonstrating due diligence.
Product Approval
- Review product in accordance with product approval processes, test results and tolerance levels, ensuring non‑compliances are escalated for appropriate management decision.
- Ensure samples are approved within a timely manner with appropriate reference samples/briefs filed away, in accordance with product approval processes.
- Lead fit sessions with Design and Buying across all owned categories.
- Maintain consistent fit across seasons, ranges, and suppliers. Manage proto, SMS, PP samples through to final sealing. Lead weekly fit meetings and oversee product from initial sketch handover to shipment sample.
- Review test reports against TWC requirements, and discuss findings with supplier, ensuring that results are acceptable. Ensure compliance with technical and legal standards prior to sealing.
- Be responsible for communicating product review comments to supplier in time effective manner. Follow up with suppliers regarding outstanding approvals, incomplete workbooks, missing base tests, or failed items requiring investigation.
- Raise concerns to the Senior Technologist or QA Manager when approval risks impact delivery or compliance. Manage Risk Assessment Sheets for all styles to minimise risk.
- Ensure children’s products meet UK, EU, and US safety legislation.
- Ensure use of safe constructions, trims, cords, and components for childrenswear.
- Manage sustainability and CSB with cross functional teams. Ensure sustainability attributes are correctly added into systems, tech packs, and CSB. Support fibre, certification, and traceability accuracy.
Distribution Centre/QC liaison
- Liaise with Northampton QC staff and overseas QC staff to ensure that products are inspected appropriately.
- Assist Technologist in ensuring that progress and status of QC inspections is always visible.
- Raise concerns to the Senior Technologist or QA Manager when approval risks impact delivery or compliance.
The skills and experience you’ll need
- Appropriate degree/ equivalent qualification.
- Eager to learn a wide variety of skills and to be flexible across several products categories.
- Raise concerns to the Senior Technologist or QA Manager when approval risks impact delivery or compliance.
- Ability to interpret grade rules, measurements, and technical specifications with high level of accuracy.
- Good understanding of construction and manufacturing with a willingness to learn.
- Good understanding of fabrics, testing, and construction with a willingness to learn further safety standards and legal requirements.
- Confidence in fit sessions with willingness to learn further safety, compliance, and testing practises.
- Good understanding of product risk assessments.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to prioritise workload.
- Informed on current and new safety and legal requirements.
- Excellent computer literacy Excel, word, PLM systems
