A leading higher education institution in Birmingham seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. The successful candidate will lecture, supervise students, and conduct research while contributing to programme development. A PhD in a relevant field and evidence of an active research portfolio are required. The role offers potential progression in a dynamic academic environment, with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
Grade 8 or 9 – Full Time, Permanent.

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK.
Salary range for Grade 8: £47,389 – £56,535 (potential progression to £63,606).
Salary range for Grade 9: £58,225 – £67,468 (potential progression to £87,974).
The School of Engineering, founded in 2016, brings together Civil, Mechanical, and Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering. We are investing in state‑of‑the‑art facilities such as a £65m signature building, a £26m National Buried Infrastructure Facility, and a £28m UK Rail Research and Innovation Network. Our research excellence was highlighted in the 2021 REF, ranking Engineering in the UK’s top 10 institutions.
We are seeking a highly research‑active Civil Engineer to contribute to the Department of Civil Engineering, which focuses on Geotechnical, Structures, Fluids, Resilient Systems & Climate Action, and Railway Engineering.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide lectures, seminars and supervise undergraduate/post‑graduate students;
- Develop and innovate undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes;
- Conduct original research and publish in journals, books and other outlets;
- Source and secure research grant funding;
- Participate in examinations, examinations committees and other departmental activities;
- Contribute to management, leadership and enterprise activities as appropriate.
• PhD (or equivalent qualification) in civil, geotechnical, structural or construction engineering.
• Evidence of a strong, research‑active portfolio and a track record of publishing.
• Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
• Industrial experience and evidence of engagement with external partners in academia, government and industry (UK and internationally) is preferred.
• Demonstrated teaching experience at a higher education institution.
