NHS Scotland is inviting applications for the role of Consultant Medical Microbiologist or Consultant Microbiologist with Infectious Diseases.

Applicants must have full GMC registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR – Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non‑UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Consultant Medical Microbiologist or Consultant Medical Microbiologist with Infectious Diseases

Applicants are invited to join a multidisciplinary team of consultants providing an infection service covering all of Lothian. The post holder will play a significant role in the clinical infection diagnostic team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP), both based at the Little France campus in Edinburgh. Responsibilities include provision of specialist infection advice for paediatrics, rotational infection service input into adult tertiary referral centres on‑site including neurosurgery and other specialities, delivery of infection liaison service and antimicrobial stewardship. We have excellent working relationships with clinical teams and ongoing collaboration with researchers in Edinburgh and beyond. Specialist virology services and five Scottish reference laboratories are also based in the department of Laboratory Medicine at the RIE. The laboratories have full UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation.

The post holder will have a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or be within six months at interview date of achieving this. On‑call frequency for Microbiology is currently 1 in 11 / 1 in 12 with prospective cover and a 3% availability supplement.

The vacancy is full‑time, but part‑time or job‑share applicants will be considered.
