Assistant or Associate Professor - Digital Scholarship & Sciences Research Specialist Librarian

Research Partnerships, a unit within the University Libraries at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, seeks a Research Specialist Librarian to support evidence synthesis, research data management, and geospatial data programs. The Digital Scholarship & Sciences Research Specialist Librarian will join existing faculty to enhance digital scholarship support, especially in the sciences, and will co-lead research metrics services.

This librarian will develop instruction and consult on research projects utilizing computational approaches such as scripting, databases, APIs, large language models, social network analysis, and text analysis. Support areas include data analysis, cleaning, visualization, and programming tools like Tableau or Flourish. Active participation in digital scholarship initiatives, including Library Carpentries and Data Carpentries, is expected.

The role involves partnering with colleagues to help researchers understand and use research metrics and impact strategies. Joining during a period of growth, the librarian will contribute to transforming the UNL Libraries into a more equitable, accessible, and sustainable information ecosystem. The position offers faculty status with a salary starting at $62,500.

Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver workshops on data and AI literacy, digital scholarship tools, and methods.
  • Provide support through teaching, workshops, and consultations across disciplines, with an emphasis on sciences.
  • Assist researchers in understanding the research lifecycle.
  • Stay current with digital scholarship trends and tools.
  • Expand capacity in areas like open science, data curation, or scientometrics.
  • Guide on research metrics, impact measures, and presentation of impact evidence.
  • Collaborate with sciences librarians to provide advanced reference and grow expertise in scientific resources.
  • Engage in antiracist work and promote inclusive excellence.
  • Contribute to professional knowledge through research and publication.
  • Participate in service activities at the library, university, and professional levels.
Qualifications

Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to growth in skills and knowledge relevant to the role. The minimum qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent, or a terminal degree in a relevant field with experience.
  • Familiarity with the research lifecycle and methods in the sciences.
  • Experience with digital scholarship tools, programming languages, and data sources.
  • Openness to learning new technologies and trends.
  • Interest in developing expertise in scientific information needs.
  • Critical understanding of bias, ethics, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a life, environmental, agricultural, or physical science.
  • Teaching, instruction, or presentation experience with diverse audiences.
  • Experience supporting research in academic environments.
  • Knowledge of academic library trends and research impact metrics.
  • Awareness of algorithmic bias and accessibility issues.
