Specialist Screening Practitioner, Band 6 (21 hours a week)

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Bowel Cancer Screening team for a fixed term of 9 months to cover maternity leave. We are a small, friendly and supportive team working within the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme within the trust to provide our service to the eligible population of Gloucestershire. We work cross site in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and Cirencester.

We are looking for a registered nurse who is a team player but who is also able to work independently and manage your own workload. With excellent communication and organisational skills, you will be responsible for running clinics, attending Endoscopy lists, following up patients with results and the potential for breaking bad news. This a great opportunity to gain experience working within our expanding service in a developing area.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a hard working, committed and flexible individual to join our team, providing high quality care to all screening participants. You must be a registered nurse. You will be responsible for supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening team across Gloucestershire in conjunction with the Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner. Travel will be required between sites. You must be able to work effectively as part of a team and as an autonomous practitioner managing your own caseload of patients.

You will be responsible for undertaking nurse led assessment clinics including provision of information and preparation and support of those undergoing endoscopic or radiological investigation within the programme. You will also be required to take part in audits and Health Promotion activities. You must have excellent communication skills being able to explain sensitive and complex information to both members of your immediate team and participants in the screening programme. This will include breaking significant news when necessary.

Job responsibilities

You will play a pivotal role in supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme by providing and co-ordinating a high standard of care in order to meet the needs of individuals choosing to take part in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. You will act as a patient advocate supporting those taking part through all stages of the programme.

We work to ensure waiting times are adhered to and provide Health Promotion activities and information across the county. You will be required to travel as part of this role so access to roadworthy transport to be able to travel to multiple locations within a working day which is likely to cover a large geographical area.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills

  • Registered nurse with substantial post registration experience
  • Experience of working in a Gastroenterology or a Cancer Care background
  • GCSE or equivalent of English and Maths to grade C or above
  • Organise and prioritise own workload/caseload of patients within the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrate ability to organise self
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills (to patients, GP's, consultants, multidisciplinary teams within primary/secondary care)
  • Demonstrate ability to work across the Trust within a variety of settings in different hospitals
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes towards cancer screening and an awareness of the screening programme as a whole
  • Demonstrate participation in quality assurance, audit and research
  • Communicate sensitive information and address barriers to understanding a wide diversity of patients and carers
  • Show awareness of national agenda and changes to improve cancer services, including local issues
  • Be able to assess patients and take accurate medical histories demonstrating excellent communication skills
