Special Constable

Are you passionate about helping others? Join Wiltshire Police as a Special Constable and help keep Wiltshire safe. We are recruiting for our next intake to begin training in 2026. This vacancy will close for applications on 21st December 2025 – however if we receive a high enough volume of applicants this may be subject to change.

About the role

Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers. They hold the same powers as Police Officers and work alongside them to prevent and detect crime, wearing identical uniform and issued with the same personal safety equipment and communication devices.

What will I be doing?

After completion of training, as a Special Constable duties can include:

  • High visibility foot patrols
  • Supporting victims of crime
  • Helping to tackle anti-social behaviour and alcohol related disorder
  • House to house enquiries
  • Helping safeguard public safety and security at local or major events
What do I need?

Being a Special Constable is a challenging and rewarding role. We are looking for honest, respectful, and motivated individuals who want to do something meaningful in their spare time, helping ensure Wiltshire is a safe place to live. If you think you have the qualities and skills to serve we want to hear from you!

Are you eligible?
  • You must have a full UK manual driving licence.
  • You must be aged 18 or older.
  • You must be a British citizen, an EC/EEA national, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.
  • You need a minimum of three years of continuous residential history in the UK to meet vetting requirements.
Additional information
  • The initial training period lasts 20 weeks.
  • Special constables are asked to commit to a minimum of 16 hours a month.
  • Specialising opportunities to develop and specialise in a range of areas of policing. This will enable you to explore areas of interest such as Drone Units, Road Policing, Search Officers and Police Support Units to name a few.
