Overview

Senior Mechanical Building Services Engineer – Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient and forward‑thinking mechanical engineer to lead the delivery of building services design across a diverse portfolio. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary consultancy environment, working on projects that span energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Purpose & Scope

Lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services, and above‑ground drainage across a range of new build and refurbishment projects. Produce specifications, condition survey reports, and technical documentation, engaging with clients and colleagues across engineering, architecture, and planning disciplines. This role blends technical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and project management, with a strong focus on supporting the transition to a low‑carbon economy through decarbonisation and grid upgrade initiatives. You will contribute to the growth of the Newcastle office and to the national Building Services team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead design and delivery of mechanical building services across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and aviation.
  • Design HVAC systems, domestic water services, and drainage with a focus on low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles.
  • Apply knowledge of CIBSE guidance, Part L, and BREEAM to ensure efficient, compliant, and client‑centric solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership in interdisciplinary design meetings and peer discussions; challenge briefs and propose innovative alternatives.
  • Produce and review detailed mechanical designs, including spatial planning, thermal calculations, and system coordination.
  • Oversee drawing production, manage design quality, and ensure outputs meet client expectations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards.
  • Apply engineering judgment to solve complex refurbishment and remodelling challenges; identify practical, greener solutions.
  • Manage mechanical building services projects, including budgets, programmes, quality assurance, and client communications; coordinate resources across multiple projects.
  • Support development of best practices and contribute to business growth.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, or significant equivalent experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership with IMechE or CIBSE is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations; hands‑on experience with design software including Navisworks, Revit, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, and IES; familiarity with Hevacomp is advantageous.
