Job summary

A leading engineering and maintenance provider in the UK seeks an experienced engineer to oversee design and document pack development. You will ensure thorough calculations and provide guidance to design engineers while working closely with site engineers. A minimum of 10 years’ experience in the field is vital, coupled with expertise in hazardous area installations and electrical standards. Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in relevant field.
  • Strong knowledge of gas analytical and metering systems is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with electrical installations according to BS7671.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of clear and concise drawing and document packs.
  • Carry out and review cable calculations and load schedules.
  • Review other design engineers’ work and provide feedback.
  • Train and advise other design engineers on principles and guidelines.
  • Work closely with site-based engineers to improve standards.
  • Identify process gaps and propose improvements.

The Role

An organized approach to project work, including strict revision control and documentation, is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design packs: oversee the development of clear and concise drawing and document packs, review existing packs, and compile or offer guidance on functional design specifications, FAT and SAT documents for analytical and metering systems.
  • Calculations: carry out and review cable calculations, I.S Loop Calculations (DSDs), AC and DC load schedules, lighting calculations, and thermal capacity calculations, ensuring their accuracy.
  • Check and Approve: review other design engineers’ work, providing detailed feedback and liaising with external approvers and appraisers.
  • Advise: train and advise other EC&I design engineers on engineering principles and guidelines, and represent the company in client meetings.
  • Bridge the Gap: work closely with site‑based and commissioning engineers to continuously improve standards and give the design team broader project perspectives including maintenance, shipping, and decommissioning.
  • Process Improvement: identify process gaps and propose improvements; advise the commissioning team during pre‑FAT and FAT on EC&I related issues.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience – ideally degree qualified or time‑served apprenticeship.
  • Demonstrable experience designing for hazardous area installations, with CompEX EX01‑EX04 and/or EX12 modules.
  • Knowledge of gas analytical and metering systems is highly advantageous.
  • Experience and knowledge of electrical installations in accordance with BS7671 (18th Edition).
