Job description

We tackle the most complex problems in quantitative finance, by bringing scientific clarity to financial complexity.

From our London HQ, we unite world‑class researchers and engineers in an environment that values deep exploration and methodical execution - because the best ideas take time to evolve. Together we’re building a world‑class platform to amplify our teams’ most powerful ideas.

Every breakthrough is built on strong foundations. In our Enterprise Infrastructure team, you’ll work across disciplines to drive the strategy, culture and structure that enable our success.

The role
  • 13th July 2026 – 16th July 2027
  • London (on‑site)

We are offering a 12‑month industrial placement for an undergraduate student to join our Linux Engineering team—part of the wider Enterprise Infrastructure function at G‑Research.

This team designs, builds and supports the Linux platforms that underpin our research and compute environments. As a placement student, you’ll contribute to the automation, configuration, observability and security of large‑scale Linux infrastructure. You'll gain experience across multiple layers of the stack—from image creation and system provisioning to platform monitoring and API development.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with modern tooling and solve real‑world technical challenges in a highly collaborative engineering environment.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Building, releasing and maintaining RHEL and Ubuntu OS images
  • Automating OS builds and deployments using Ansible and CI/CD pipelines
  • Operating provisioning and lifecycle tooling, for example with PXE boot, Kickstart and cloud‑init
  • Contributing to Linux security, patching and compliance efforts
  • Supporting the development of APIs, databases and packaging systems
  • Enhancing platform observability and troubleshooting infrastructure issues
  • Collaborating with engineers across teams to integrate new features and improve performance
Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a proactive, curious student who wants to go beyond simply using Linux and start building with it.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Be enrolled on a Computer Science, Mathematics or related sandwich degree programme, with graduation expected in 2028
  • A predicted grade of 2:1 or above (or equivalent)
  • A good understanding of Linux systems, ideally Ubuntu and RHEL
  • Basic scripting or automation experience, for example with Python, Ansible and Bash
  • Familiarity with version control with Git
  • A solid grasp of networking, filesystems and computer system fundamentals
  • An interest in system reliability, platform performance and infrastructure automation

It’s a bonus if you bring:

  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code or DevOps practices
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling, such as Jenkins
  • Exposure to Linux internals, including boot process, modules and tuning
  • Knowledge of virtualisation or containerisation with Docker and Kubernetes for example
  • An interest in OpenStack, AWS or hybrid cloud platforms
  • A personal home lab or self‑driven experimentation with systems
  • Awareness of the financial services or HPC industry

Please note: Due to our focus on developing future talent, this opportunity is only open to candidates graduating in 2028.

Why should you apply?
  • Highly competitive compensation
  • 30 days’ annual leave
  • 9% company pension contributions
  • Lunch provided daily (via Just Eat for Business) and a dedicated barista bar
  • Comprehensive healthcare and life assurance
  • Monthly company‑wide events
  • Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance
