Security upgrades are essential in high-traffic areas, especially for shared residential blocks near busy town centres. We recently completed an intercom and access control installation at a block of flats on Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth . With increased reports of unauthorised entry, this client wanted to better secure the building’s front entrance while improving resident access.

The Challenge: Failing Door Security

The previous system had become unreliable, with the front door regularly being forced open. The existing intercom was non-functional, and the only way for tenants to allow entry was manually. This created a major security risk, especially given the block’s location close to Bournemouth nightlife and late-night footfall.

• External panel with trade entry, audio handset call buttons, and key fob reader
• Privacy handsets inside each flat, giving residents the ability to turn their handset off when needed
• Discreet, flush-mounted install for a clean and professional finish

This upgrade not only adds convenience but gives each resident more control over how and when they receive calls.

Strengthening the Front Door

For added protection, we installed:

• 300kg magnetic lock
• Electric strike lock
• Upgraded mechanical door locks for physical reinforcement

This combination means the door now resists forced entry while still allowing remote access control. These upgrades are DDA-compliant and allow for both secure locking and safe egress.

Paxton Switch2 Access Control

To enhance entry management, we installed a Paxton Switch2 access control system:

• Key fobs assigned to residents only
• Internal controller unit mounted out of sight
• Fail-safe release setup for emergencies

This means only authorised users with fobs can gain entry, eliminating the issue of unknown visitors tailgating through the door.
