Highways Inspection Officer
We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Inspection Officer to join us! This is a full‑time, permanent role based out and about in the borough with hybrid working, and a salary of £32,962 – £36,791 pa.

£32,962 – £36,791 pa.
Responsibilities
- Carry out highway safety inspections in line with agreed inspection regimes within the HMMP, including reactive/ad‑hoc safety inspections.
- Ensure accurate recording of safety and service defects. Inspections include carriageways, footways, car parks, bus stops, tree visual inspections, overhanging vegetation.
- Issue Highways 'calling card' to private landowners as required.
- Respond/investigate enquiries and complaints regarding Highway Services, taking measures to reduce problems and improve the Council’s image and service standard.
- Communicate via Confirm (software), email, calls or visits in a timely manner, escalating where necessary.
- Provide information and support RBWM highway claims procedure, including collecting information and photographic evidence for insurance claims.
- Attend court as witness on behalf of the Highway Authority when required.
- When defects are identified, ensure it is a Council responsibility before proceeding.
- Organise works (raise work orders, obtain C2 notices, arrange streetworks permit, and other approvals) where budgets permit.
- Work within the agreed budget, ensuring expenditure remains within budget at all times, notifying of potential overspend or risk immediately through programmes of work.
- Ensure all works are conducted in line with Legal and organisational Health & Safety procedures, enforcing bylaws and related legislation including the Highways Act 1980.
Qualifications and Experience
- Holder of a Highway Safety Inspection C & G 6033 with Lantra skills card.
- Experience of carrying out Highway Inspections and holds a NRSWA qualification.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision in a busy office environment whilst prioritising and organising a varying workload.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with all levels of people, including angry/dissatisfied customers.
- Experience/knowledge in the planning of a street works site relating to signing, lighting, guarding and site safety.
