About the Role

Reporting to the Directors, the Head of Production, will own the entire Hurst Group production process. As a senior member of the leadership team, they “lead from the front”, taking responsibility for operational excellence in ensuring that all content across all Hurst Group activity is produced to an exceptionally high standard in an efficient and timely manner, whether internal or external, created by Hurst, or originally provided as raw copy by advertisers or other commercial partners, and is compliant to all applicable laws and regulations (esp. ASA/CAP). They are also responsible for internal communications within Hurst Group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Production of Commercial Content – Creating advertising and advertorial copy across all HMC, HMA and HML products, including print, digital/native, Out of Home and additional formats.
  • Production of Internal Content – Developing HGL brand assets, media packs, training materials and content for the four HGL websites.
  • Management of the HML Production Team – Leading day‑day team operations, including scheduling and workload allocation, copy chasing, deadline management, project oversight from inception to delivery, and maintaining consistent quality standards.
  • Production Team Development – Providing or arranging training in key skills such as design, production technology and personal development (e.g. time management). Establishing a network of freelance designers and production specialists to support periods of increased demand.
  • New Product Development – Collaborating with internal stakeholders and external partners to design and develop new products and services for HGL’s commercial offering.
  • Trusted Production Expertise – Acting as a reliable source of guidance on all production‑related matters for both internal colleagues and external clients.
  • Industry Knowledge – Continuously expanding understanding of production practices across media channels, sectors and themes, and regularly attending training to stay current with emerging trends and insights.
  • Production Liaison – Maintaining regular communication with external production contacts (e.g. media owner sales and production teams, freelance designers, clients) and internal teams (sales, admin, marketing, finance) to ensure accurate and timely campaign delivery.
  • Client Retention – Providing exceptional customer service, conducting post‑publication follow‑up, and nurturing new and existing client relationships to encourage repeat business and future account growth.
Key Management Responsibilities
  • Performance Management – Ensure the production process and production team members operate at maximum efficiency.
  • Uphold Policies – Monitor and promote adherence to company rules and procedures.
  • Onboarding – Responsible for smoothly onboarding and supporting new incoming production team members.
  • Coaching and Training – Provide ongoing coaching, encouragement and counsel to production team members.
  • Customer Service – Successfully mitigate and resolve customer disputes as and when they arise, ahead of escalation to a director.
  • Offboarding – Offboard outgoing team members, by conducting handover and distribute/delegate outgoing colleagues’ clients/tasks.
  • Company Champion – Plays an active and positive role in promoting new company initiatives, offering solutions, support and product ideas to the leadership team.
  • Leadership – Be a positive and authoritative leader in the absence of directors.
  • Recruitment – Qualify and conduct interviews with new production candidates.
  • Budgets & Planning – Working closely with the directors and leadership team to agree new products, channels and department budgets.
