Job description
Overview

Clinical Teaching Fellow (Post 6) – Bristol Yr 2 & Yr 3. Closing date: 20 February 2026. These roles are replacement posts within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital with a focus on Undergraduate Medical Education. The Trust places emphasis on staff wellbeing and offers support to help you maintain wellbeing and that of colleagues.

These posts (table 1) are aimed at post-foundation year doctors who wish to spend time working in a medical educational role at the Academy in Swindon, working with medical students from the University of Bristol, Oxford, and Kings College London. The Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) role is a fixed-term career development opportunity, normally for 12 months as a fellowship position rather than a permanent service role. They are suitable for doctors who wish to take time out before starting higher medical training or pursue an academic career, possibly working toward an MSc or MD. The role comprises an educational component (80%) delivered in the academy and a supernumerary clinical component in the NHS Trust (20%), or 50% clinical and 50% educational ward-based work as described below.

Main duties of the job

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed to meet service needs.

  1. The CTF works on a day-to-day basis with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators, and the UT/UCs responsible for organising the formal teaching programme and clinical placements. They ensure that specified formal teaching sessions are appropriately timetabled and delivered.
  2. The CTFs need to be in regular communication with the UT/UC and with each other. They meet formally throughout the year to review the course and plan for the future. Each CTF will develop and use an individual or group CTF Outlook Calendar.
  3. An Office Based CTF is expected to work 40 hours per week 09:00 – 17:00, of which one day will be spent in a clinical specialty. Workload is variable and hours may be flexible. A Ward Based CTF in ED and/or ITU (6–12 month rotation) will generally work one or two weeks clinically and one or two weeks in the Academy, and will be included on the departmental rota which may include weekends. See rotations in Table 1.
  4. Students will be present in the Academy for only part of a calendar year. When considering the sessional commitment, periods of greater or less educational activity should be averaged over the year.

Job responsibilities

The educational component

12. The educational duties of the CTF – office based will mostly be delivered in the academy environment (80% of their time). These are set out in table I and include responsibility for student choice projects and associated field trips. The specific area of educational responsibility will be determined by the appointee's interests.

The clinical component

  1. The office based CTF will spend 20% of their time (up to two sessions per week) working clinically. The role provides an opportunity to trial a specialty before applying for higher postgraduate training. The clinical role is a supernumerary, daytime hours (band 1A). If the appointee wishes to participate in out-of-hours or on-call duties, this can be negotiated with the Clinical Lead/Rota Coordinator and will be paid separately by the clinical department. Participation must not impact the educational component.
  2. WB-CTF CCU/ED (Post 9) will spend 50% of time working clinically and 50% in the Academy. For F3 doctors this generally involves 6 months in ED and 6 months in ITU. For those who have begun specialist training in ED or ITU, 12 months in that clinical area may be possible. The same terms regarding work patterns, including out-of-hours/on-call, apply as for F3 doctors.
  3. WB-CTF in ED/Acute Care (Post 10) will spend 50% of time working clinically and 50% in the Academy. For F3 doctors this generally involves 6 months in ED and 6 months in Acute Care. Those who have begun specialist training in ED or Acute Care will be placed in that clinical area for the full year, with possible negotiation on request. The same terms regarding work patterns apply as for F3 doctors.
  4. WB-CTF in Acute Medicine (Post 11) will spend 12 months in AM rotating 50% clinical and 50% Academy. The same terms apply as for F3 doctors.
  5. WB-CTF in all other specialties (Posts 12–15) will spend 12 months in the same clinical area, working 50% clinical and 50% Academy. The same terms apply as for F3 doctors.
  6. Clinical Teaching Fellows may, under exceptional circumstances, be re-allocated to other clinical areas at the direction of the Medical Director and the Trust Executive Board.

For doctors who have begun specialist training, placement will be in that clinical area for the full 12 months. The same terms regarding out-of-hours/on-call duties apply.
