Commercial Associate/Senior Associate - NHS/Public Sector (4-8 PQE)

Join a team of experts and progressive thinkers

We are looking for an Associate or Senior Associate to join our vibrant and growing team in the Commercial and Infrastructure Department to focus on commercial contracts and procurement in the Health and Public Sector.

You will be joining a highly respected team, who are at the forefront of healthcare commercial work nationally, across both the NHS and the fast‑growing independent health sector. We advise on a range of commercial transactions including: joint ventures, collaborations and partnerships; new models of care provision in the NHS; outsourcing, insourcing and shared services; health and local government integration, as well as a wide variety of business to business and business to consumer contracts in the independent health and social care markets.

The team that you would be joining work on a range of projects including outsourcing of services (such as pharmacy, pathology and IT), variations, exit agreements and drafting, reviewing, marking‑up and reporting on a range of commercial health contracts. The team work with a number of Trusts on commercialisation projects to generate income including products from AI data platforms to unique medical devices and also on cost saving projects which include reviewing contract portfolios to ensure that suppliers are performing as expected and appropriate payments are being made.

The Partner, with whom you would be working closely, also specialises in procurement and provides advice to central government departments, NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts, local authorities and housing associations on structuring procurements and supporting on procurements. They also provide ad hoc advice on matters such as permitted changes to contracts and exemptions and undertakes a lot of work with clients on non‑procured land deals. The suitable candidate would therefore be exposed to a wide variety of commercial and procurement work.

The team works closely with colleagues across the firm, including those in our corporate, procurement, property, employment and banking and corporate finance teams.

Role

You will be working within the commercial contracts team and you will:

  • Play a key role in the delivery of a range of projects and commercial transactions to NHS and Public Sector clients
  • Advise on a range of structures and contractual arrangements between public/public sector and public/private sector
  • Advise NHS and Public Sector clients on their different procurement options, assisting during procurement and approval stages and planning timetables
  • Work with clients to ensure procurement documents reflect their goals and objectives, leading to the selection of the right partner
  • Have the opportunity to further grow the expertise in the team and be involved in marketing initiatives to promote the work that we do and build our reputation in emerging fields such as health and AI
  • Have the opportunity to engage regularly with clients, attend client meetings and work closely with other legal, financial and technical advisors
  • Work with colleagues across the Firm and coordinate input as required on multidisciplinary projects

  • Develop your business development acumen, network with other lawyers across the firm, other firms and intermediaries

What we are looking for from you

You will have:

  • Experience advising the NHS and/or Public Sector clients on a range of commercial contracts
  • Experience advising on Public Sector procurement (desirable, but not essential)
  • A passion to learn, enthusiasm and the desire to excel as a lawyer
  • The ability to deliver clear, precise advice
  • Experience of or an interest in supervising junior lawyers
  • Strong technical skills and an ability to understand and work through complex issues
  • A demonstrable ability to adopt a practical and commercial approach to legal issues
  • An enthusiasm to be involved in marketing and promotion of what we do
  • Ability to liaise effectively with clients and build relationships, with an interest in business development
  • Ability to operate with a high level of self‑sufficiency combined with an awareness of own abilities
