Job Purpose
  • Works collaboratively with and under the direct supervision of a registered nurse to participate in the delivery of patient care for the improvement of quality of life for patients and families. Job is performed appropriately for the age population served as defined in the department's scope of care.

Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to
  1. Performs direct and indirect patient care promptly and courteously as directed by registered nurse and/or physician to facilitate patient flow through the Emergency Department.
    • Assists in the initial assessment and management of illness or injury to emergency patients in accordance with specified protocol and procedure.
    • Reports changes in the patient's condition, in a timely and accurate manner, to the patient's primary nurse.
    • Provides direct care according to hospital policy (i.e., splints, ace wraps, dressings, connecting to monitors, performing 12‑lead EKG, and skin preps) in conformity with recognized safe practices.
    • Assists with the collection and transport of specimens in accordance with the universal precaution policy.
    • Assists with the admission, discharge and transfer of patients to the unit.
    • Performs effectively in emergency response situations in accordance with BRGMC policies and procedures.
    • Assists patients with elimination (bedpan, urinal, portable commode, bathroom).
    • Assists physicians with minor surgeries.
    • Keeps patients and families advised of treatment processes and any delays in their treatment.
  2. Maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment.
    • Documents patient care accurately and appropriately in all assigned patient records.
    • Documents interventions on patient record and reports to registered nurse care and condition of patient.
    • Continually gathers data to assist Nurse with developing plan of care.
    • Obtains and documents complete vital signs of patients, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration and pulse.
    • Documents intake and output as assigned.
  3. Monitors and restocks supplies and equipment as needed for each shift.
    • Monitors and restocks supplies and equipment according to PAR levels at the beginning of each shift.
    • Demonstrates familiarity with all supplies and proper use of equipment in the department and their location.
    • Inspects emergency medical equipment to ensure serviceability and compliance with safety and infection control regulations and standards.
    • Retrieves medications from pharmacy in accordance with BRGMC policy.
  4. Practices appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control procedures.
    • Performs waste removal from all areas of the Emergency Department.
    • Maintains patient rooms clean at all times.
    • Actively participates in maintaining the cleanliness of the patient care environment and nursing station.
    • Ensures patient safety by adhering to BRGMC Safety Policy guidelines.
    • Assists in patient transport.
    • Follows BRGMC policies and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of equipment.
    • Assists with the preparation and return of instruments to Sterile Processing for sterilization.
    • Performs or assists others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
  5. Assist nursing staff with ensuring the safety of psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.
    • Ensures patient safety by adhering to hospital patients in the Emergency Department.
    • Assists patients to de‑escalate behavior during the development of a crisis, using non‑violent crisis intervention techniques, and provides assistance to the treatment team during the code process per established hospital guidelines.
    • Reports changes in the patient's condition, in a timely and accurate manner, to the patient's nurse.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
Specific Experience Requirements

Previous job experience preferred.

Educational Requirements

  • Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patients related complaints, information related to patient location, patient's religious beliefs, research information and/or public health records.

  • Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, transporting patients, transporting medications and blood, and monitoring clinical alarms.
