Descrição da oferta de emprego

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders across sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in more than 80 countries, and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to expand the MAAS team. Our mission with MAAS ("Metal as a Service") is to provide the best solution for building and running private bare-metal infrastructure, offering a cloud-style on-demand API for physical server provisioning, network configuration, and storage. We seek engineering managers with experience in high-quality software development and high-performance team leadership, with deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, Linux storage, and data center networking capabilities.

MAAS components span the entire software stack: from low-level hardware detection and provisioning to the management web interface, API, and CLI. Our most effective engineers are fluent in all these layers and can anticipate the consequences of design and engineering choices in a complex distributed system.

At Canonical, a solid technical background is essential, but your primary responsibility is to run an effective team and develop your colleagues. You should help them grow as engineers, deliver outstanding work, find professional and personal satisfaction, and collaborate well with colleagues and the community. Technical leadership and a background in software engineering are prerequisites. You will lead, challenge, and develop engineers, influence culture positively, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategy and execution. Collaboration across engineering teams is also expected, with interfaces to teams responsible for cloud-init, LXD, and public cloud offerings.

The successful candidate will possess leadership qualities, deep Linux knowledge, and the ability to solve challenging distributed systems problems.

Location: This is a work-from-anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.

The role entails:

  • Leading a distributed team of engineers in your time zone (organised by Americas, EMEA, etc.)
  • Talent development through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career planning
  • Setting and managing expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
  • Advancing modern software development practices
  • Participating in code and architectural reviews
  • Engaging with broader teams at Canonical, the open-source community, and partners
  • Traveling to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year

Additional requirements include a strong academic record, an undergraduate degree in a technical field, confidence in speaking up and sharing ideas, a track record of exceeding expectations, leadership and mentorship skills, passion for technology, excellent communication skills, experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred), interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability, diversity appreciation, self-motivation, result orientation, and the ability to travel internationally.

Nice-to-have skills include experience with modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue using Typescript.

What we offer includes a distributed work environment, personal development budget, annual compensation review, recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave, Employee Assistance Programme, travel opportunities, and more.

About Canonical: We are a pioneering open-source tech firm, publishing Ubuntu, and leading the global move to open source. We recruit globally, uphold high standards, and foster a workplace free from discrimination. Working here challenges you to think differently, learn new skills, and excel.

Canonical is an equal opportunity employer, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds.
