About the role

We are looking for a Scientist I to apply next-generation sequencing approaches for the cultivation of unculturable microbes and development of their commercial potential.

Company

Bactobio is a young London-based biotech company (2020) using AI, genomics, and synthetic biology to culture previously unculturable microbes and screen them for antimicrobials. We regularly discover chemically novel antimicrobials that are effective against some of the biggest infectious diseases in agritech and healthcare, and select diseases to target based on the lack of current, effective solutions and the potential market size.

Role and team

You will develop and execute our commercialisation strategy, communicate the potential of our platform, and initiate strategic, scientific, and commercial partnerships. You will also help us win large grants to fuel the discovery and development of our antimicrobial compounds.

The process innovation team consists of automation and sequencing experts that support the microbial generation team to generate, process, and stock novel microbial species. We have cultured more than 4,000 previously unexplored microbial species and continue to grow our library using whole genome sequencing and amplicon sequencing. We are a diverse team and are expanding our platform and automated pipelines to increase cultivation rates and explore larger chemical and biological space.

Your responsibilities
  • Supporting and troubleshooting our high-throughput sequencing workflows
  • Applying nanopore sequencing (ONT) methods (e.g. whole genome, amplicon, metagenomics) to identify microbial species or communities
  • Identifying opportunities to automate the pipeline and support implementation to accelerate discovery
  • Work with our current Sequencing Lead to continue to expand NGS capabilities
  • Training technicians on ONT sequencing
Qualifications
  • A PhD in next-generation sequencing or equivalent 3-4 years' experience
  • Extensive wet-lab NGS experience using ONT, including DNA extraction methods, multiplexing, library preparation, and downstream bioinformatics
  • Data-driven mindset and understanding of statistics
  • Self-motivated with drive to expand the technical platform
  • Good priority management and adaptability
  • Collaborative drive and team ethic
Nice to have
  • Understanding of soil microbial community data
  • Experience with lab automation or high-throughput approaches
  • Interest in working in an impact-driven, multicultural environment
  • Access to training resources and employee wellbeing programs
  • Flexible start/end times within core hours
  • Weekly team activities and on-site snacks
  • Udemy training allowance
