Work Overview
As an apprentice, you’ll work at the company and get hands‑on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

Your training course
Early years practitioner – equal to Level 2 (GCSE)
Course contents
- Support babies and young children through transitions and significant events such as moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling
- Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to protect them (including domestic, neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse)
- Identify risks and hazards in the provision and during off‑site visits and follow reporting procedures
- Use prevention and control of infection techniques for hand washing and food preparation and hygiene, deal with spillages safely, dispose of waste correctly and use appropriate personal protective equipment
- Use equipment, furniture and materials safely and securely, following manufacturers’ instructions and the provision’s requirements
- Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and hygiene, including oral hygiene practices
- Promote health and wellbeing by encouraging balanced nutrition and physical activity, both indoors and outdoors
- Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the child’s development, stage, dignity and needs (feeding, nappy changing, potty training, skin and hair care, rest and sleep)
- Communicate with all children, including those with additional language or needs, and use both verbal and non‑verbal methods
- Extend children’s development through communication and learning activities such as mark‑making, writing, reading and early language development
- Support mathematical learning including numbers, patterns, counting, sorting and matching
- Plan, implement and review individual learning plans for each child, using feedback and mentoring to identify development goals
- Work cooperatively with colleagues, other professionals and agencies to meet children’s needs and enable progress
- Collaborate with parents or carers, recognising their role and encouraging active participation in their child’s care and learning

Other requirements
Working with young children can be tiring; you may be working shifts. Good timekeeping and reliability are essential. You must be prepared to complete your qualification within the time allowance and attend all college workshops as required by the training provider.
