Job description

Opportunity: Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Manchester
Rate: Negotiable and Competitive
Duration: 6 months+
IR35: Outside

We are seeking the services of an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support with the delivery of geotechnical engineering design, investigations, risk assessment and supervision of works for railway infrastructure schemes.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigations & Analysis – Plan and manage ground investigations, analyse data, and prepare geotechnical reports (GIR/GDR) in line with Eurocode 7 and Network Rail standards.
  • Design & Engineering – Deliver geotechnical designs for earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, slopes, and drainage, using appropriate modelling and analysis tools.
  • Project Delivery & Site Support – Provide geotechnical input to multidisciplinary projects, assess risks, ensure designs are safe, buildable, and cost-effective, and supervise/verify works on site.
  • Risk, Safety & Compliance – Apply CDM regulations, manage geotechnical risks, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Collaboration & Development – Work with internal/external stakeholders, communicate technical issues clearly, and support the development of junior engineers.
  • A degree in Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Proven experience working within Geotechnical Engineering/Engineering Geology in the UK
  • Experience in undertaking geotechnical designs including: retaining walls, foundations, soil nailing etc.
  • Working knowledge of rail engineering
  • An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
  • CDM, Risk assessment and external audit competency
  • Full UK driving licence and use of a vehicle

The Geotechnical engineer should be suitably qualified with relevant experience.
The role will be based in South Manchester.
