Job description
External Trustee (Voluntary)

Join to apply for the External Trustee (Voluntary) role at Liverpool Guild of Students

We’re Liverpool Guild of Students, the award‑winning Students’ Union for the University of Liverpool. Our job is to create a home for each of the 30,000 students during their time here, ensuring each student gets the most out of student life beyond their degree.

We like to think of ourselves as a hub for opportunities – whether that be through joining one of our 200+ societies, volunteering, enjoying a pub quiz or grabbing matcha from Union Brew. Each student becomes a member of the Guild as soon as they join the University, and being part of the Guild means looking forward to seeing what opportunities students embark on and achieve every year.

Students’ Unions have a huge impact – on education and in wider society. The impact on individuals is profound – every day we witness students undergoing life‑changing experiences with the activities we offer. Our students deserve the best.

Role Description

Be an active and vocal member of our Board of Trustees, responsible for ensuring students are at the heart of everything we do and for setting the strategy of the organisation. The Board also approves all policy, the annual budget, monitors organisational performance and supports our core staff team of over 70 people.

Responsibilities
  • Attend four board meetings a year, including a Board Away Day in summer to introduce new board members.
  • Review board papers in advance of meetings and contribute constructively to strategic decisions.
  • Sit on board sub‑committees, which meet during office hours three times per year.
  • Be available by e‑mail for urgent decisions between meetings.
  • Support the approval of policy, the annual budget, and the monitoring of organisational performance.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong network within Liverpool and a good understanding of the city.
  • Knowledge of the Higher Education sector and Students’ Unions (SUs).
  • Experience and understanding of complex organisations, such as SUs, that run multiple services, seek to be a democratic voice for members and are run by elected student leadership.
  • Knowledge and experience of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) best practice.
  • Legally able to act as a non‑executive director under both charity and company law.
Remuneration
