Position Summary
The University of New Mexico seeks applications for an Open Rank Assistant or Associate Professor in the History of Native America with an anticipated start date of August 2026. The History Department features strong interconnected teaching and graduate programs on the U.S. West, United States, and Latin America. UNM is a member of the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies (NCAIS). The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Native American history and mentor PhD and master’s students in a graduate program with a long tradition of training scholars in the field. Duties include teaching various courses in the program per semester. The candidate will hold a PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training in Native American history, which must be awarded by the date of appointment.

Qualifications
- Minimum qualification: PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training and focus in Native American history, with degree awarded by the date of appointment.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Record of publication or commitment to publish in Native American History.
- University-level teaching experience, including ability to teach upper-division Native American history and lower-division surveys, demonstrated by syllabi, classroom experience, cover letter, and teaching evaluations.
- Interest and/or experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students at master’s and PhD levels.
- Ability to build relationships with Native communities and align research, teaching, or service with Native community interests.
- Commitment to cultivate understanding of New Mexico cultures and to support the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.
