Overview

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Medical Technologist in performing all duties of a Medical Technologist, including diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in diagnosis and monitoring of disease states.
  • Follow standardized procedures and assist in sample preparation for testing.
  • Analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits; serve as a resource to other staff and as a liaison between management and staff.
  • Act as the point of contact for daily lab operations, assessing, resolving, and/or escalating issues to the laboratory manager as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the laboratory manager to maintain daily laboratory operations, including staffing, analyzer troubleshooting, paperwork, billing tasks, overtime control, and problem solving.
  • Oversee lab staff workflow across locations to ensure efficient operations and appropriate staff assignments to each clinic location.
  • Oversee daily billing responsibilities for the lab and continuously seek opportunities to improve organizational workflow.
  • Perform, verify, and report laboratory tests per policy/procedure manuals and maintain knowledge of practices, principles, and techniques.
  • Analyze blood cells by microscopic techniques and ensure operation of analyzers and other equipment, including calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, inventory management, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies inventory, anticipate needed supplies, place orders, and verify receipt.
  • Conserve resources and provide medical technology information by answering questions and requests; prepare reports of findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through educational activities and participate in inter- and intra-departmental cooperation.
  • Adhere to infection-control and hazardous waste policies; protect patient confidentiality and comply with quality control, documentation, licensure, and accreditation requirements.
  • Investigate abnormal or unexpected test results before reporting; communicate results clearly and confidentially to staff, physicians, and other personnel.
  • Demonstrate procedures to new personnel and assist in technical in-services.
  • Follow safety guidelines for handling potentially infectious agents and universally apply precautions.
  • Participate in proficiency testing as assigned; manage all phases of patient testing (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical).
Education, Certification, Licensure, and Registration
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university plus one year internship in an accredited Medical Technology program.
  • Registered as a Medical Technologist through ASCP, NCA, or AMT.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • 5 years MT experience required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; basic computer skills; ability to multitask and learn patient care procedures; ability to plan, prioritize, and complete tasks; ability to demonstrate compassion and caring.
  • Flexibility and willingness to do what is necessary to complete tasks promptly.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
Interpersonal Skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication; ability to interact with physicians, staff, and external parties while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly able to talk or hear; stand, walk, sit; use hands for grasping and handling; and reach with arms.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment

The work may involve potential exposure to infectious diseases. Vaccinations and safety training are provided.
