Job description

We need everyone's positive energy and innovative thinking to lead the energy transition to net zero. That's why we welcome applications from all backgrounds and experiences and have a range of flexible working options to suit everyone!

Lead Mechanical Engineer
Here's what you'll be doing

Location: Home based covering Southeast sites and involving nationwide travel when required.

At E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) UK, we are leading the way in the UK's energy transition, playing a pivotal role in achieving net zero. We specialise in delivering innovative, sustainable energy infrastructure, including heat networks that provide efficient, low-carbon heating solutions to communities and businesses. With our projects, we are reducing carbon footprints and driving forward the shift to cleaner energy. Join us and be part of a team that’s not just imagining a greener future but actively building it.

We’re looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our Asset Optimisation Governance (AOG) team. You’ll play a key role in delivering expert mechanical engineering support across the EIS portfolio — with a focus on optimising the performance of heat and power plant assets, associated mechanical systems, and pipework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to mechanical asset optimisation projects across EIS, including supporting planned and unplanned outages.
  • Provide expert mechanical engineering advice across heat and power assets, auxiliary plant, and mechanical pipework systems.
  • Support the development and delivery of risk-based maintenance strategies and ensure compliance with PSSR and SAFed standards.
  • Assist with mechanical and boiler maintenance contract management, including technical input into procurement and contractor performance reviews.
  • Define and deliver mechanical engineering solutions to improve asset performance within defined project budgets and objectives.
  • Act as a Technical Authority for mechanical asset governance, supporting the update of IMS documents and safety rules.
  • Collaborate closely with O&M teams, Design teams, and other AOG teams to foster a culture of Process Safety and continuous improvement.
  • Support incident investigations, Panels of Inquiry, and lessons learned exercises across EIS sites.
  • Ensure all work is aligned with financial standards and procurement principles.
What we need from you
  • A relevant Mechanical Engineering degree, HNC, or equivalent.
  • Significant experience with boilers and auxiliary mechanical plant in the power or heat generation sectors.
  • Strong working knowledge of PSSR regulations and SAFed guidance for steam and hot water boilers.
  • Proven experience delivering engineering projects and working within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to diagnose operational problems, develop innovative solutions, and manage contracts.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and produce clear reports.
  • Business financial awareness and experience managing project budgets.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

It would be great if you had

  • Knowledge of District Heating Networks.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Experience with Industrial/Commercial Heat Pumps.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Experience delivering technical training in mechanical or boiler engineering topics.
