Overview
Pharmacy Manager, Investigational Drug Services. Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.
Responsibilities
- Manage the Investigational Drug Service division which handles over 600 active trials.
- Provide expert guidance in support of clinical investigational drug trials to clinicians, investigators and staff.
- Coordinate and supervise the Investigational Drug Service staff; initiate, monitor, and audit investigational drug studies to ensure compliance with federal, state, FDA, and other regulations.
- Develop policies and SOPs for safe and efficient storage, preparation, distribution and control of investigational drugs.
- Ensure comprehensive, accurate, and timely records and reports including usage and dispensing records, collection forms, financial and budgeting information.
- Serve as a resource and liaison for principal investigators, research sponsors, the IRB, and pharmacy.
- Oversee staffing, training, evaluations, and participation on inter- and intradepartmental committees; ensure drug distribution, clinical services, and investigational services are provided per department policies.
- May perform day-to-day drug distribution, processing, and therapeutic intervention as needed.
- Provide training and educational lectures to other medical professionals; may be a co-principal investigator on patient clinical research or an investigator on Pharmacy practice research.
- Operate as a Direct Patient Care Provider as defined in Pharmacy Policy.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
- Post grad 1 in Pharmacy Practice or Hospital Administration, or equivalent experience preferred.
- Knowledge of pharmacy practice and industry best practices; stay updated on pharmacy regulations, drug products, and developments in research and design.
- Knowledge of policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, patient privacy and treatment; knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations.
- Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration; conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and develop cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment; adaptability, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
- Ability to organize operations and improve workflow systems and protocols.
- Ability to collaborate across departments; strong interpersonal skills with peers, patients, multidisciplinary teams, senior management, and staff.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate issues and identify resolutions; ability to satisfy all parties in patient issue resolution.
- Active listening and openness to diverse viewpoints; soliciting and incorporating ideas when appropriate.
- Proficiency in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology; knowledge of IT software in the pharmaceutical field.
- At least two years of experience in developing and implementing investigational drug research pharmacy or related service programs.
- Experience in reviewing investigational drug use and ensuring conformity to established standards.
- Knowledge of policies governing the use and administration of investigational drugs; experience in oncology pharmacy practice.
- Five (5) or more years of related work experience.
License/Certification
- Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
- Current BLS or ACLS certification
