Job description
Overview

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. If you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

This position is for the Engineering Manager (EM) responsible for the Data Layer Team within the Developer Experience (DevX) organization. The Data Layer Team is responsible for the health of the GraphQL Service and the front-end data-fetching library. These are essential services that support the foundation of our applications and process billions of operations per month.

Responsibilities
  • Build and manage engineering teams to guide the development of features, services, and infrastructure.
  • Coach direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and support their career growth.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate our vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap. Break down complex projects into smaller pieces and lead iterative design and implementation.
  • Be a thoughtful technical voice within the team, aiding in architectural decisions and fostering a culture of high-quality code and engineering processes. Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure successful delivery and operation of multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
  • Work closely with talent organizations to identify and recruit exceptional engineers who align with Coinbase’s culture and contribute to our products.
  • Contribute to and take ownership of processes that drive engineering quality and meet engineering SLAs.
Qualifications
  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 2 years of engineering management experience.
  • Strong understanding of high-quality code and effective software engineering processes, creating an environment that fosters these principles.
  • Execution-focused mindset, capable of navigating ambiguity and delivering results.
  • Ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term planning.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
  • Hands-on capability when needed—writing/reviewing code or technical documents, participating in on-call rotations and leading incidents, or triaging/troubleshooting bugs.
  • Passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together.
Nice to have
  • Prior experience leading a Developer Experience/Productivity, Platform, or similar domain team.
  • Experience at a fast-paced, high-growth internet/software company.
