Overview
Ascend Wellness Holdings is looking to hire a Dispensary General Manager for their Grand Rapids-28th St location. The General Manager will be responsible for driving financial performance, elevating customer experience, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining compliance and safety. Qualifications for the position include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and customer service skills. Ascend Wellness Holdings is a vertically integrated cannabis operator with assets in multiple states, focused on providing a premium customer-focused retail experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive Results (Financial Performance): Track revenue, margin, and budget targets; coach to results; monitor sales performance daily/weekly/monthly and adjust strategy as needed; optimize product menus, mix, pricing, and promotions with Commercial Corporate Teams; manage menus (banners, sequencing, deals, promotions, add-ons); maximize delivery and curbside performance where applicable; collaborate cross-functionally to test and scale new revenue-driving initiatives; activate action plans when KPIs fall below target; optimize profitability through fiscal discipline, cost management, accurate reporting, and fiscal accountability; approve payroll, PTO, and overtime; review sales, invoices, and performance reports; monitor and reduce controllable expenses; analyze P&L for margin improvement opportunities.
- Elevate Customer Experience: Deliver exceptional service, build loyalty, and create memorable in-store experiences; maintain non-negotiables (add-on menus, Ascend Pay, Legends Club, welcome greeter, refreshments); lead by example on the sales floor; optimize customer flow and merchandising; schedule and activate pop-ups; use customer feedback to improve operations; de-escalate customer issues professionally; respond to Google Reviews via Edge within 24 hours; work with Call Center to ensure customer experience; drive customer loyalty programs; integrate community engagement events into CX strategy.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure flawless execution of daily store operations and uphold brand standards; manage opening/closing procedures, cash handling, scheduling, receiving, RFS; oversee inventory control, replenishment, shrink prevention, and merchandising standards; coordinate vendor logistics and deliveries; work with Retail Operations Maintenance on repairs and capex; maintain operational checklists for consistency; integrate inventory SOPs (timely in-take, aging management, cycle counts, vault organization, accessory replenishment); continuously monitor and respond to competitive activity; conduct regular competitive store walks; perform daily/weekly competitive menu reviews; communicate insights to Regional and RPM.
- Lead & Develop Talent: Attract, develop, and retain high-performing teams through coaching, engagement, and recognition; recruit, hire, train, and coach staff; manage labor scheduling to balance costs and service needs; conduct talent reviews and succession planning; foster a positive, customer-focused culture; communicate corporate direction through daily updates and meetings; partner with HRBPs on employee relations; monitor attendance tracking.
- Ensure Compliance & Safety: Uphold legal, regulatory, and company standards while maintaining a safe workplace; ensure adherence to company policies, state cannabis regulations, labor laws, and health/safety standards; ensure state and company compliance standards are maintained; ensure audit readiness; build relationships with regulators and local authorities; ensure all employees are trained/certified before independent work; comply with regulatory requirements for working in the cannabis industry.
- Strategic Growth & Innovation: Identify, pilot, and scale initiatives that drive future growth and brand relevance; develop local marketing and community engagement programs with marketing partners; execute seasonal or promotional merchandising changes; collaborate on local promotion ideas and menus; pilot in-store concepts (loyalty programs, vendor pop-ups, Meet the Grower events) and provide feedback when requested.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or 7+ years’ experience in a supervisory or management role in a retail setting (POS operations, inventory control systems, strong retail business acumen).
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Cannabis industry working experience preferred but not required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Exceptional customer service skills; positive attitude; team player; strong work ethic.
- Understanding of applicable state and local laws and regulations as they pertain to the industry, personnel law, safety regulations, local codes, and SOPs.
- Must pass required background checks and remain compliant with regulatory requirements for working in the cannabis industry.
- Must obtain and retain a Registered Agent Card issued by the state of operation.
- Excellent organization and time management; detail-oriented; clear and effective communication.
- This position primarily performs duties onsite in a retail dispensary store environment.
