Job description

Food has lost its soul to modern convenience. And with it, has lost the power to nourish, inspire, and connect us. So in 2018, CookUnity was founded as the first-of-its-kind platform that connects the world with the source of truly great food: chefs. Today, CookUnity delivers 35 million meals a year from the industry’s best chefs to homes all over the country. Fresh. Ready-to-eat. And crafted with the passion that nourishes body and soul.

Unwilling to stop there, CookUnity is expanding beyond delivery to become an ever-innovating marketplace focused on our singular mission: empower Chefs to nourish the world.

If that mission has you hungry in more ways than one, you’ve found the right job posting.

About the Team:

One of our core values at CookUnity is empowering Small Teams to have a Big Impact. The Legal team lives this core value everyday - it is small (formed in March 2024 by our current General Counsel), but has a big impact on nearly every Company function. From commercial contracts to compliance matters to corporate transactions, the Legal team leverages its autonomy and abilities to enable the Company to grow, evolve, and succeed.

The role:

In this role, you will lead regulatory compliance efforts across USDA, FDA, and consumer protection laws, ensuring our operations, labeling, and tech platforms meet all requirements. You will handle internal audits, policy development, and training initiatives while managing responses to inspections, recalls, and inquiries. You will also collaborate with cross-functional teams to mitigate legal risks and support compliance in commercial agreements. This position requires a hands-on, strategic legal professional ready to drive impact in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead USDA and FDA regulatory compliance across manufacturing, labeling, product distribution, and tech platforms.
  • Support consumer tech compliance—FTC advertising rules, CCPA/CPRA, ADA, consumer protection.
  • Lead internal audits and investigations; manage policy development and training best practices.
  • Coordinate responses to regulatory agency inquiries, inspections, recalls, and litigation.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams (R&D, Ops, Product, Engineering, FSQA, and People) on regulatory risk mitigation.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review vendor and platform agreements with compliance implications.
Qualifications:
  • J.D. from accredited law school; admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 5–10 years experience in-house or with a law firm.
  • Knowledge of, and significant professional exposure to, regulatory compliance work, including consumer-tech compliance frameworks (e.g., data privacy, marketing law) and food safety law.
  • Exceptional drafting, communication, and project leadership skills.
  • Experience handling agency audits, recalls, enforcement actions, and internal investigations.
Preferred requirements:
  • USDA, FDA and/or Data Privacy regulatory experience preferred
