Description
The MA Department of Fire Services provides training and assistance to fire departments in the Commonwealth. Through its MA Firefighting Academy, thousands of firefighters are provided with training in the protection of life and property and to promote and enhance firefighter safety. DFS additionally provides services to assist and support the fire service community through fire prevention and education services of the Fire Safety Division, as well as emergency response services through its Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division and State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
The DFS is seeking an experienced Chief Mechanic to fill a new position at their Stow, MA location. The Chief Public Safety Vehicle Mechanic will oversee a talented and skilled staff, providing guidance and expertise to ensure DFS vehicle operations and essential services operate smoothly.
As the Chief Public Safety Vehicle Mechanic, the position will be responsible for oversight of repair and working conditions of a large fleet, including but not limited to fire apparatus, heavy duty emergency response trucks, trailers, front end loaders, backhoes, generators, pickup trucks and passenger vehicles. The position supervises and participates in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of engines, electrical and mechanical systems and structural components of vehicles; monitors the conditions of the vehicle service shop to troubleshoot environmental compliance and occupational safety; and performs administrative duties needed to schedule and track the progress of repair and maintenance activities, expenses, and parts and supply inventories for the fleet unit.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have a current and valid Massachusetts Class D operator’s license and at least (A) four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in motor vehicle diagnostics and repair, of which (B) two (2) years must have included direct supervisory responsibility for staff and (C) two (2) years working with various types of vehicle systems such as air, diesel, electrified, hybrid and hydraulic, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Applicant must have training and experience in the repair of light, heavy and hoisting equipment, a valid and current Class A and/or B CDL operator’s license, a Class 1B and 2A hoisting license, and A.S.E. certifications A1-A8 and/or T1-T8.
