JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Public Works Utilities Superintendent, a Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of light to heavy construction equipment and performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water and sewer infrastructure. The operation of backhoe/track-hoe equipment is primary to this position as this equipment is essential in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the underground utility systems. The Heavy Equipment Operator will work on the schedule required to fulfill the position’s duties. Work involves choices of action within the limits set by standard practices and procedures. The Heavy Equipment Operator may be called upon to assist with divisions of Public Works, including, but not limited to street and facility maintenance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally performed in an outdoor environment; work schedule is generally M-Fri, 6:00am – 2:30pm and may be subject to change. Work may involve moderate to heavy work in all types of weather. Employees in this position will need to stand, stoop, walk, occasionally lift to 100 pounds and/or heavy objects and may perform other similar actions during the workday. The Town of Florence promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment using pre-employment and Department of Transportation-mandated drug testing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED, plus three (3) to five (5) years of relevant work experience in the construction of water and/or wastewater underground systems, maintenance, or related work experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
ADEQ Water Distribution Grade III certification, ADEQ Wastewater Collections Operator Grade IV certification. Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement. Work-Zone certification, Asbestos certification, Trench Safety certification, or be able to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
