Job summary

A local community sports initiative based in Sligo is seeking a Walking for All Officer to lead the Walking For All programme, aimed at improving health and social inclusion. You will manage volunteer walk leaders, oversee project delivery, and promote community participation through various events and initiatives. The successful candidate must have a relevant degree and experience in project management, along with excellent interpersonal skills. This role offers a 36-month contract with flexible hours and a dynamic work environment.

Walking For All is a project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Locally, the project is co‑ordinated by SSRP with the support of lead partner Outscape.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of a Walking For All programme, a strategically important, volunteer‑led walking participation programme developed to improve health, wellbeing and social inclusion within local communities across County Sligo.

About the role

The Walking For All Officer will be responsible for the overall management of the Walking For All project, including administrative and financial management. The successful candidate will lead the development, coordination and sustainability of regular volunteer‑led walks across Sligo and will meet the programme’s key objectives of increasing community participation in walking and promoting social cohesion.

Key responsibilities
  • Recruit, train and support Volunteer Walk Leaders, fostering community participation.
  • Plan and deliver one‑day walking training courses for volunteers.
  • Implement a strong support system for new leaders, including initial led walks and ongoing contact.
  • Organise annual Walking Celebration Events and incentive programmes for volunteers.
  • Develop and execute twinning initiatives for established walking groups.
  • Promote Walking For All through social media, posters, leaflets, events and presentations.
  • Maintain accurate records, manage the programme budget and prepare monitoring & evaluation reports.
  • Report to the Regional Manager, Outscape, SSRP CEO and the Project Working Group.
  • Contribute to the SSRP Strategic Plan and provide regular updates to the CEO and Board.
Job details
  • Location: SSRP offices, Sligo Town (significant time on the ground across the county).
  • Contract: 36‑month (January 2026–December 2028), with a 6‑month probationary period.
  • Hours: 35 per week, with flexible/after‑hours work as required.
  • Annual leave: 26 days. Salary commences at Grade 4 Point 1 of the public sector scale. Travel expenses reimbursed when appropriate.
Person specification

Essential

  • Minimum Level 6 or Level 7 Degree (NFQ) in relevant discipline: Sports Development, Health Fitness, Sport Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education, Community Development or related fields.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in project planning and delivery, stakeholder engagement, event/training coordination and administrative/organisational support.
  • Strong administrative skills, financial management, reporting and compliance with organisational procedures.
  • GA‑VETTING mandatory. Full clean EU driving licence, ability to travel efficiently, commitment to work evenings and weekends.
