Job description

MongoDB is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Atlas Clusters Durability Availability & Performance (DAP) Team.

The team is responsible for building MongoDB Atlas, our database as a service offering and fastest growing product.Atlas allows users to deploy fault‑tolerant, secure, globally distributed MongoDB clusters in just minutes. Our customers range from early stage startups through to AI era titans and major financial institutions. These customers span many industries but all have in common the need for a database which is highly Secure, Durable, Available and Performant.

The Atlas Clusters Availability & Durability team develops the software that manages the Atlas cluster infrastructure from the running virtual machines, through the three major cloud provider platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) all the way up to the UIs and APIs where customers build and configure their Atlas clusters. We are constantly challenged to design features like auto‑healing, auto‑scaling, and high confidence durability auditing on a set of database clusters at a humongous scale.

The team's day to day work involves primarily Java, with additional responsibilities in TypeScript+React, and other technologies such as Go, Bazel, and Chef. We collaborate closely with our product, design, support, and engineering leadership teams to build systems which keep our customers' companies running.

This role can be based out of our Dublin office or remotely in the Ireland region.

What you’ll do
  • Become an expert in and improve our systems for monitoring and healing database clusters
  • Contribute to our systems for guaranteeing and auditing the durability of customer data
  • Lead technical projects from design to operation, working with stakeholders to build consensus and share progress and operational insights
  • Thoroughly investigate issues across many abstraction levels, understanding how architectural patterns in cloud providers connect to operating system behaviour
  • Collaborate with product and design teams, considering our varied customers' perspectives while building technical solutions
  • Work with customers and support engineers to resolve customer issues and propose improvements to our products
  • Collaborate with team members to develop our codebase, best practices, and design principles
We’re looking for someone who
  • Has at least 3 years of professional software development experience, or recent experience in cloudor database software development
  • Has strong experience writing backend systems in a compiled language (Java, C#, C++, etc.)
  • Is comfortable working across the stack of a modern web application (e.g. React, TypeScript, Enzyme)
  • Is familiar with modern testing methodologies with experience of unit, integration, and end to end testing
  • Has experience with at least one major cloud provider technology (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Success Measures
  • In 1 month, you'll have shipped several changes into production and begun onboarding to a small‑medium project
  • In 3 months, you'll have contributed to a large project and be ready to drive a small‑medium project of your own
  • In 6 months, you'll be leading a project and have a strong relationship with our stakeholders
  • In 12 months, you'll have designed new features, led development work, and become a go‑to expert on parts of the system
