Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division Cootehill Cavan

Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurised, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.

Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.

What are you responsible for?

The Regional Engineering Manager acts as the Subject-Matter Expert (SME) and provides technical leadership and expertise in process engineering, equipment engineering and hygienic equipment design for the Abbott Nutrition powder manufacturing business. The role provides technical support, advice and training to the EU / Asia region as required. This is a leadership role, and develops and documents the technical specifications for processing equipment-related scope in major capital projects, participates in design reviews, monitors the quality of execution and leades commissioning & validation of new system. The role interacts with other regional SMEs and business stakeholders to capture and share best practices globally.

Your main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Lead and support a diverse matrix project team to successfully deliver multiple capital projects within specification, schedule and budget ensuring the new systems are designed, fabricated, installed, commissioned and validated according to the project specifications.
  • Reporting to the area Program Manager you will be managing the day-to-day interaction between all key stakeholders ensuring project deliverables are achieved ensuring EHS, environmental and quality systems compliance at all times.
  • Project risk management and communication.
  • Optimize and troubleshoot the manufacturing processes to provide sustainable gains in cost effectiveness, quality improvement and environmental emission reductions through capital projects, statistical analysis, design of experiments and procedural changes.
  • Act as an SME or independent technical expert (ITE) on a project's technical matters.
  • Understand and comply with applicable EHS policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and standards.
  • Building the safety culture and maintaining Zero safety or environmental incidents
  • Setting and achieving exceptional quality and GMP standards at all levels of the operation from site housekeeping to detailed finishing.
  • Managing vendor site attendances – ensuring security, safety and GMP policies are adhered to rigorously.
  • Develop technical specifications and conduct detailed design review of the technical proposals provided by vendors.
  • Requires strong decision making, planning & organisational skills, and ability to progress with minimal managerial direction ensuring decisions are made on time or elevated where necessary to ensure progress

What kind of knowledge and experience do you bring with you?

  • Bachelor’s degree Science / Engineering (or equivalent);
  • Candidate will ideally have PMP certification, LSS green belt and a history of lifelong learning – embracing technology and new methods;
  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in a similar position;
  • Experience in the food, pharmaceutical or infant milk formula processing industry is a plus;
  • Experience in EHEDG and hygienic design in a regulated environment such as Medical Devices, Pharmaceutical Products or Food Manufacturing desirable;
  • Strong technical knowledge and application of processing / engineering / automation concepts
  • Ability to work on problems that are complex in scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors;
  • Ability to form and develop interpersonal, professional relationships; display socially and professionally appropriate behavior;
  • Ability to work independently and in groups; ability to work cross-functionally;
  • Demonstrated initiative and proactive & structured problem-solving skills; critical-thinking skills;
  • Ability and aptitude to use various types of databases and other computer software;
  • Ability to quickly gain knowledge, understanding or skills and is willing to learn;
