A leading data centre services company based in Dublin is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and delivery of mechanical systems for critical data centre projects. This senior role requires extensive experience in HVAC and mission-critical environments, leadership skills, and a degree in Mechanical Engineering. You will mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the highest standards in mechanical design, compliance, and innovation.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in data centre or mission-critical environments.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng or working towards).
  • Deep knowledge of mechanical systems in data centre design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design from concept through to construction for data centre projects.
  • Oversee HVAC, chilled water, ventilation, and cooling system design.
  • Manage and review detailed design calculations and technical reports.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and structural teams.

  • Fortivum are now seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer with experience leading the mechanical design and delivery of mission-critical data centre projects.
  • This senior role involves driving technical excellence, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop robust, innovative, and efficient mechanical systems aligned with the high-performance requirements of data centre environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design from concept through to construction for hyperscale and enterprise data centre projects.
  • Oversee HVAC, chilled water, ventilation, and cooling system design in line with industry specific guidelines.
  • Manage and review detailed design calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, BMS, and structural teams to ensure seamless integration of all building services.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients, attending meetings, design workshops, and site visits as needed.
  • Guide and mentor intermediate and junior mechanical engineers, fostering knowledge sharing and technical development.
  • Contribute to QA/QC processes, peer reviews, and design audits to ensure consistency and compliance with best practices.
  • Stay up to date with emerging data centre technologies, sustainability measures, and regulatory standards.
  • Support business development by contributing to technical proposals and client presentations when required.
Requirements
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years in data centre or mission-critical environments.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng or working towards).
  • Deep knowledge of mechanical systems in data centre design, including high-redundancy HVAC, free cooling, CRAC/CRAH, and chilled water systems.
  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and design calculation software
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to lead client-facing discussions and cross-discipline coordination.
