The role
Phlebotomist
(0.64 WTE Part time, Permanent Contract)

St Patrick’s Mental Health Services is seeking a Phlebotomist to fill a vacancy. The Phlebotomist provide a comprehensive phlebotomy service to St Patrick’s University Hospital.
The Staff Grade Occupational Therapist will report to the Occupational Therapy Manager.
The standard working week applying to the post is 24 hours per week:
Monday 7.30am - 1.30pm
Tuesday 7.30am - 1.30pm
Wednesday 7.30am - 1.30pm
Friday 7.30am - 1.30pm

Location
St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS), incorporating St Patrick’s University Hospital, James’s Street, Dublin 8; St Patrick’s Hospital, Lucan; Willow Grove Adolescent Unit, James’s Street, Dublin 8; and the Dean Clinics.

Responsibilities
  • Collecting relevant bio samples and corresponding request forms for diagnostic testing
  • Labelling of specimens accurately, legibly, and completely
  • Correctly matching specimens to the requests forms and entering into the master log daily
  • Assuming responsibility for forwarding all incoming results to relevant wards and consultants
  • Performing lithium and clozaril tests on designated days
  • Testing members of staff for Hepatitis B as required
  • Dealing with all telephone queries
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of all patients is strictly maintained
  • Liaising with other departments in the Hospital and external bodies as required to optimise laboratory and phlebotomy services
  • Ensuring that all Health & Safety guidelines, including those relating to PPE are adhered to
  • Taking all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of infections and accidents occurring, and ensuring that all duties are carried out in a sterile environment
  • Participating in ongoing education/training as relevant
  • Assisting any new staff to the department to ensure they are familiar with all relevant legislation and Hospital policies

Candidates must have:
  • Current registration on general or psychiatric register of NMBI
  • A minimum of 2 years post registration nursing experience
  • Ideally have previous experience working as a Phlebotomist or if not, demonstrate a real commitment to, and interest in developing a career in the speciality, including willingness to undertake further education/training as required

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Commission legislative and regulatory guidelines for service delivery

Terms and Conditions

Tenure: 0.64WTE Part time, Permanent contract, pensionable as below.

Working Week: The standard hours applying to this position is 24 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Salary: The salary for the position is based on the Enhanced Staff Nurse 2025 pay scale, €43,868 - €57,255 (pro rata), and is commensurate with experience.

Annual Leave The annual leave associated with the position is in keeping with the leave accorded to staff nurses and considering post registration experience. Annual leave entitlement will be pro rata on time worked.

Pension: All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme after successful completion of probation. The scheme is a defined contribution scheme with a deduction from the salary of the employee of 4%.

In respect of an internal appointment being made, the individual’s existing pension arrangements will continue.

Probation: The appointee will be appointed in a probationary capacity for the first six months during which time the job holder’s performance will be subject to ongoing review.

Any extension to or suspension of the period of probation will be in line with the European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) 2022.

Health: The appointee must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the position and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character: The appointee must be of good character.

Retirement Age: Normal retirement age for employees is 66 years which at present is also normal pension age.
