Reporting to: Director of Nursing and Services

Location: Southeast - Remote working

Post: 35 hours per week

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only non-governmental organisation of its kind in the country. We are dedicated to supporting people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and their families and carers. Our services include specialist nursing, financial, practical and psychological supports for people with MND and their families.

The Mission of the IMDA is: To support people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), their families and carers through advocacy, home and professional support

The role of IMNDA CNM 2 nurse is:

  • To encourage and promote the best methods of care, education, research, and treatment for people with MND throughout Ireland
  • To establish and promote models of good practice in the delivery of specialised services to patients, their families, and carers, setting standards of excellence.
  • To communicate knowledge of MND and related disorders to raise awareness in Ireland

Key Responsibilities

This appointed person is a registered nurse who has extensive experience and clinical expertise in MND nursing/ Neurology nursing/ palliative care. The role encompasses a focus on care comprising of assessment, planning and delivery of patient care in collaboration with medical, nursing and other allied healthcare professionals. They will promote the service of IMNDA and deliver on strategic targets.

Management

  • Manage individual case load of patients with MND as assigned by the Director of Nursing and Services
  • Work as a team member with nursing colleagues, Services team and all staff in IMNDA
  • Act as an effective liaison person between IMNDA patients, families and relevant hospital, community HSE services and external agencies
  • Ensure the care delivered to MND patients is aligned to best practice
  • Support and advise patients on referrals to appropriate IMNDA and specialist services
  • Evaluate clinical problems and liaises with the Director of Nursing and with multidisciplinary team and refer appropriately
  • Always maintain and respect patient confidentiality
  • Liaise with IMNDA Services team to arrange access to patients services including financial, psychological, and practical resources
  • Update the Director of Nursing and Services on issues relating to patients and their families

Clinical Focus

  • Provide a nursing resource service on all aspects of MND
  • Prioritise patients needs and refer appropriately to allied Health Care Professionals in the community and tertiary care as per the Sláintecare principles
  • Report clinical issues to the Director of Nursing and Services
  • Maintain awareness within the speciality of current developments in MND
  • Ensure that accurate documentation and record keeping in Salesforce data base is maintained in line with GDPR principles
  • Provide reports as required including monthly and annual report
  • Attend Beaumont Hospital MND and community MDT clinic as required
  • Attend clinical supervision with nursing colleagues

Education and Training

  • Develop and facilitate education and support for patients, their families and health care professionals
  • Ensure patients have access to relevant education material about MND
  • Assist in training of IMNDA staff members and patients and families where appropriate
  • Accountable for ensuring that practice is up to date, evidence based in order to provide the highest standard of care to MND patients
  • Keep up to date with nursing literature and new developments in MND management, education and practice
  • Develop relationships with local and national key stakeholders
  • Comply with mandatory training requirements

Advocacy

  • Promote and provide family centred care, to involve patients and families in the decision making in treatments plans
  • Develop and maintain strong link between the relevant healthcare professionals within this specialist MND area
  • Attend internal and external multidisciplinary team meetings as directed for decision making on treatment care plans

Professional Qualifications and/or relevant Experience

  • Registered General Nurse by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
  • Post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting, preferable Neurology
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience working in the area of MND/Neurology
  • Experience of community nursing
  • Experience of palliative care
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organisational, administration and co-ordination skill
  • Excellent ICT skills, including MS Office suite, MS Teams and a good working knowledge of database management
  • Ability to work effectively alone and with co-workers and collaborate with health and social care professionals, community organisations and others to maintain and build partnerships to maximise the impact of joint resources
  • Proactive and flexible in approach
  • Post-registration education relevant to the area of specialist practice at level 8 QQI (Higher Diploma or Honours)
  • Higher Diploma in Neurology or Neuroscience Nursing or willingness to undertake same within an agreed time frame
  • Ability to assist with special projects as required or self-determined to enhance the capacity and/or IMNDA strategic objectives.

General

  • Represent IMNDA at relevant meetings and conferences as directed
  • Travel throughout designated region of responsibility, other regions and head office as required. Regular overnight stays may be required in respect of travel.
