Position Overview

The Equipment Engineer I supports a fleet of lab and facility equipment and may demonstrate developing specialization in Development or Operations contributions. This role works mostly with autonomy, will triage and support equipment issues, develop and implement continuous improvement ideas, participate in equipment and automation development lifecycles, support process verification and validation, and train end users.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Performs installation and operational qualification (IOQ) for standard lab equipment (handheld pipettes, thermocyclers, centrifuges, plate readers, tube pickers, tube capper/decapper), controlled temperature units (refrigerators, freezers), environmental monitoring systems (Vaisala)
  • Coordinates preventative maintenance and calibration of complex lab equipment (liquid handlers, sequencers)
  • Supports equipment lifecycle management processes and procedures by maintaining equipment records for traceability
  • Assists in troubleshooting and incident management of a subset of lab equipment
  • Supports vendor services and facilities’ system management
  • Performs preventative maintenance and calibration of complex lab equipment (liquid handlers, sequencers)
  • Supports hardware and software integrations with software platforms (LIMS, log management services, schedulers, orchestrators) with lab equipment
  • Participates in equipment and automation development lifecycles, focusing on specific lifecycle phases
  • Drives ideation and implements continuous improvement ideas for relevant business and laboratory process steps
  • Coordinates routine maintenance and calibration of lab and facility equipment with external vendors and suppliers
  • Prepares and reviews documents (protocols, reports, nonconformances, risk assessments, change control requests) to ensure compliance in a Quality environment
  • May support internal and external audits with review of equipment records and related procedures
  • Trains end users and teammates with a customer‑first mindset
  • All other duties as assigned
Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Other)

Required

  • Associate in engineering or science, 4+ years related experience
  • Bachelor’s in engineering or science, 2+ years related experience
  • Ability to author standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment and method IQOQ plans and reports, and change control requests (CCRs) and design input requirements (DIRs)
  • Solid customer‑first communication skills as a team representative
  • Experience with commercial off‑the‑shelf benchtop lab equipment and automated liquid handling platforms (Hamilton, Tecan, Dynamic Devices, Formulatrix)
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve engineering problems with structured approaches and suggest improvements (first principles, Lean Six Sigma)
  • Experience gathering and reporting metrics

Preferred

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, NGS, analytical QC)
Working Conditions
  • Laboratory environment with human specimens; requires training on laboratory health and safety practices, and spill response
  • Might be requested to work off standard hours, weekends, and holidays

Compensation

Salary Range: $79,400 - $119,200
