Respiratory Physiotherapist, Fixed Term

Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic physiotherapist to join the respiratory, critical care and surgery inpatient physiotherapy team. This post is a fixed term cover Band 6 static physio 37.5 hours within the team based at St Peter’s Hospital.
There is excellent multi-disciplinary working with the respiratory and critical care teams where you will be involved in complex respiratory patients including complex NIV and invasive ventilation weaning and complex respiratory patients’ management including tracheostomy care, COPD and other respiratory conditions.
You will be expected to support and supervise the Band 5’s and therapy assistants with the support of the Band 7 physiotherapy team lead. They will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care and improved outcomes for patients.
The successful candidate will have the ability to use their initiative, deputise in the absence of the band 7 and be an effective team worker with sound organisational abilities.
Unfortunately, as this is only a fixed term contract we will not be able to offer sponsorship for this role.

Main duties of the job
- Work as an autonomous practitioner and manage a specialist respiratory caseload.
- Complete comprehensive patient assessments, formulate clinical diagnoses and problem lists and provide physiotherapy.
- Contribute to MDT handovers or problem patient sessions.
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, putting patient care and experience first.
- Support junior staff with caseload management, prioritisation and clinical reasoning.
- Actively participate in service development and contribute to monitoring of standards of practice, and take personal responsibility in your professional development and professional registration requirements.
- Show passion for providing a high level of care and safeguarding to patients known to our service.
- Use initiative, communicate with empathy and be an effective team player.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and deputise for the team lead whenever necessary.
- Participate in the development of physiotherapists and support staff within respiratory through training, competencies and supervision.
- To take part in the weekend respiratory and on-call service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1.MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:
Clinical
- To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/ multi-pathologies.
- To undertake assessment and treatment of patients requiring NIV, fully ventilated and other complex respiratory conditions.
- To manage patients with respiratory failure (acute or chronic).
- To use investigative and analytical skills to assess complex patients and support other more junior physiotherapy staff with their patients as required.
- To devise individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills.
Communication
- To be able to communicate highly complex information sensitively to patients to gain their cooperation for treatment and valid consent.
- To use persuading and influencing skills to encourage patients to self-manage their conditions.
- To communicate any changes in care plan or treatment approach to other therapists as necessary.
- To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress treatment programmes. This may include patients who will have difficulties in understanding or communicating, e.g. patients who may be deaf, blind, or be unable to accept the diagnosis, or for whom English is not their first language.
- To be able to manage frequently highly stressful, upsetting, or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.
- To ensure timely and effective communication with the Therapy Lead on all professional matters.
Analytical / Judgment skills
- To use ongoing investigative and analytical skills, manual assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures to assess complex patients and formulate a clinical diagnosis.
- To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend the best course of intervention.
- To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required.
- To keep up to date with developments, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes to your clinical practice.

- To attend all relevant training to maintain competency and confidence.
- To be responsible for and actively record your own personal development. This may include active participation in journal clubs, clinical reasoning and problem patient sessions as participant and facilitator.

- To work closely with other senior staff to ensure appropriate on-call training in preparation for weekend and emergency on-call working.
- To undertake clinical reasoning and problem patient sessions as facilitator and participant to include on-call training.
- To participate in any training sessions as a recipient and facilitator.
- To disseminate any training received to other staff and healthcare professionals.

Person specification
Qualifications
- BSc Physiotherapy, or Graduate Diploma Physiotherapy, or MSc Physiotherapy
- HCPC registered
- Evidence of relevant post registration training
Experience
- Recent and relevant experience on acute wards in respiratory and critical care.
- Experience of working in a team and contributing to team decisions.
- Experience of managing and prioritising own caseload.
- Experience of working with assistants and ability to delegate.
Knowledge
- Essential Working knowledge of current NHS priorities and initiatives.
- Knowledge of Non-Invasive Ventilation, Critical Care /relevant respiratory guidelines.
- Demonstrates an understanding of different treatment approaches and the evidence base and physiotherapy management for respiratory patients.
Skills
- Evidence of CPD and ability to identify own development needs.
- Essential Able to communicate effectively with patients and with other staff to ensure care, treatment and support are not compromised.
- Work effectively within a team and build strong professional relationships with the MDT.
- Ability to identify and set clinical goals with patients, set an appropriate treatment plan to achieve these particularly in a critical care or respiratory setting.
- Manage conflict and difficult situations.
