Job Description

AI Standards Lab’s main value is to speed up standardisation efforts, and to make sure they produce high-quality standards reflecting the latest technical insights, by providing texts that can be directly adopted by standardisation committees. A lot of your work will include tasks around writing these texts.

Your day-to-day work will also include reading existing research and talking to experts, as well as doing some literature reviews.

All of your written output needs to comply with our internal style guide to enable easy adoption by standardisation committees. This involves translating vocabulary from different fields into one unified vocabulary used in standard settings.

Part of your work will be based on specific risk topics and items that we have already identified as a priority. There is also room for exploring further risk items and bringing suggestions.

Additionally, strong candidates may get a placement at the EU standards committee JTC21 to collaborate with other technical experts and to propose and defend our standards contributions in the technical committee discussions.

Role Requirements

We are looking for a candidate that has:

  • Background and/or experience in AI Technology (either AI/ML research or applied AI/ML)
    • Preferably in recent AI technology trends like Large Language Models, foundation models
  • Good technical writing skills, for example experience in writing academic papers, writing technical documentation that records or summarizes the outcome of industrial R&D activities, or writing textbooks
  • Good understanding of AI risks and AI safety literature
  • Research background, experience in conducting literature reviews and/or distillation
  • Ability to work on tasks with low supervision, and to organize one’s work while being part of a remote team
  • Strong English language skills
  • For the option of being also placed as a technical expert in JTC21:
    • good rhetoric skills
    • resident in the European Union, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom, North Macedonia, Turkey, or Serbia.
Desirable qualifications:

    • Applied risk management or safety engineering for
      • high-impact AI systems, or
      • cyber-physical/mechatronic systems, or
      • automated decision-making systems, or
      • automated recommendation systems that can influence people’s rights or lives
    • Standards writing
    • Policy work
    • Safety engineering processes that use technical standards
  • Being able to start on short notice
  • Shared concern about risks from AI systems
