Thermo Fisher’s Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) provides sophisticated technologies to analyze virtually any sample type including proteins and their structure, inorganic materials at atomic resolution, and chemicals and their composition. Our mass spectrometry, electron microscopy and spectroscopic technologies have been crucial in advancing industrial processes such as semiconductor manufacturing and have helped answer foundational questions in the life sciences.
As Thermo Fisher develops next generation analytical instruments, Artificial Intelligence and Software will play a key role in combining and analyzing extensive data sets from different modalities, identifying features of interest and simplifying instrument operation. Protecting the significant investment required to bring these solutions to market is an integral part of the company’s business strategy.
This role requires a strategic approach, a strong technical background, and skills in drafting and prosecuting AI and Software patent applications. You will be joining a successful IP team that prides itself on delivering strong, defensible patents and thoughtful, business-focused counseling solutions.
Preparing and prosecuting high-quality, commercially-relevant patent applications in-house and managing preparation and prosecution by outside counsel.
Working directly with R&D and product teams and educating them on patentable inventions, processes for maintaining confidential business information, and the overall development of intellectual property assets.
Interacting with and providing legal and strategic guidance to senior management, engineers and other functional leadership.
Developing a principled and strategic framework for protecting AI/software innovation.
Conducting in-depth analysis of competitor and industry IP portfolios, driving processes for tracking innovations and competitor IP activity and filing oppositions where appropriate.
Navigating freedom-to-operate issues.
Qualification as a European Patent Attorney.
Five or more years of experience preparing and successfully prosecuting European patent applications related to software inventions.
Background in or experience with Machine Learning, Data Analytics, or Statistics.
Background or experience with analytical instrumentation and data analysis/interpretation/visualization software is a plus.
