Whether creating its own work or accepting private or public commissions, its work spans fine art, design objects, the creation of new materials and extends to luxury interiors and prestigious brand collaborations.
Led by founders, brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch since 2004, from its studio, workshop and production facility in Greenwich, London, Based Upon is well known for its collaborative creative culture, making work as a team.
It invites new members seeking to bring their own unique expertise and perspectives to a high functioning team with equally high standards.
The studio works at elemental scale and in intricate detail. While much of the studio’s iconic work is in metal or resins, it invites new members with interests in varied materials and processes.
Outline
We’re looking for a talented and motivated artist and designer maker to join our established workshop team at Based Upon in Southeast London. This role is part of our growing craft function and offers the opportunity to work across a variety of materials, processes, and disciplines within a dynamic and creative environment.
You’ll be involved in hands-on making at every stage of the process – from concept development through to final finishing – contributing to unique, design-led projects that demand a strong eye for detail, creative thinking, and problem-solving ability. You’ll bring a broad foundation in making and design, along with a proactive mindset and a willingness to learn, listen, and evolve with the team.
