Based Upon is hiring an artist and designer maker to join its team in London.

Introduction

Characterised by its rich materiality, extraordinary craftsmanship, and multi-layered narratives, Based Upon’s work is considered pioneering within the global design art world.

Whether creating its own work or accepting private or public commissions, its work spans fine art, design objects, the creation of new materials and extends to luxury interiors and prestigious brand collaborations.

Led by founders, brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch since 2004, from its studio, workshop and production facility in Greenwich, London, Based Upon is well known for its collaborative creative culture, making work as a team.

It invites new members seeking to bring their own unique expertise and perspectives to a high functioning team with equally high standards.

The studio works at elemental scale and in intricate detail. While much of the studio’s iconic work is in metal or resins, it invites new members with interests in varied materials and processes.

Outline

We’re looking for a talented and motivated artist and designer maker to join our established workshop team at Based Upon in Southeast London. This role is part of our growing craft function and offers the opportunity to work across a variety of materials, processes, and disciplines within a dynamic and creative environment.

You’ll be involved in hands-on making at every stage of the process – from concept development through to final finishing – contributing to unique, design-led projects that demand a strong eye for detail, creative thinking, and problem-solving ability. You’ll bring a broad foundation in making and design, along with a proactive mindset and a willingness to learn, listen, and evolve with the team.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to deepen their multidisciplinary skills, gain exposure to high-level craftsmanship, and contribute meaningfully to a team that values curiosity, precision, and collaboration.

Essential interests, experience and skills:

  • a strong interest in materials, making, and hands-on craftsmanship
  • experience working in a studio, workshop, or creative production environment
  • a broad skillset across design and fabrication techniques — ideally including casting, finishing, or modelmaking
  • comfortable working on both creative and technical aspects of a project
  • high attention to detail and pride in producing quality work
  • confident working independently while contributing to a team dynamic
  • a proactive, open-minded, and solutions-focused approach
  • interest in learning new materials and methods as part of a collaborative practice

Other details and requirements

  • standard working hours are 08.45am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday
  • working location: SE18
