Job description

CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation is an independent Finnish organisation that works to prevent and resolve conflicts through dialogue and mediation. Founded in 2000 by Nobel Peace Laureate and former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, we have since grown to be a leader in the field of international peacemaking.

CMI is now seeking a Project Manager, Great Lakes Region, for its Sub-Saharan Africa team.

The Project Manager will be responsible for:
  • Leading the planning, implementation and monitoring of the project, including budget responsibility, reporting and approval rights;
  • Leading the work planning of the project team, providing everyday guidance and ensuring responsible and efficient implementation of the work, including providing oversight and supervision of funding and related resources;
  • Monitoring contextual developments in the region and leading the development of new workstreams responding to these;
  • Team management; acting as supervisor to project staff and liaising with consultants;
  • Developing networks and partnerships; responsibility to maintain contacts to CMI’s partners;
  • Participating in the development of the overall CMI programme and cross team working;
  • New business development and fundraising for the work files in the Sub-Saharan Africa team as needed;
  • Other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
A successful candidate is expected to have:
  • a minimum of five (5) years of managing projects in international mediation or peacebuilding in Africa;
  • a demonstrated strong interest in issues related to conflict resolution, understanding of key conflict dynamics in and around the Great Lakes region as well as practical (field) experience is considered an asset;
  • solid leadership, project management (e.g. strategic development, budgeting, results-based management, supervisory skills) and fundraising skills;
  • a Master’s degree from a relevant field;
  • excellent communication and teamworking skills as well as experience in working on politically sensitive matters;
  • excellent organisational and planning skills, creativity, gender sensitivity and good political judgement;
  • a flexible attitude and ability to work in a dynamic, international team with sometimes tight timelines and under pressure;
  • strong analytical and writing skills as well as good IT skills;
  • fluent written and spoken skills in English and French;
  • willingness to travel to target countries with challenging operational contexts, if needed;
  • commitment to CMI values and principles of neutrality.

The Project Manager will report to Head, Sub-Saharan Africa. The position is located in Helsinki or Brussels. A valid working permit for working in the EU is a prerequisite. Frequent travel may be required. The position is fixed term until 31 December 2026, preferred starting in January 2025 or as agreed.
