Senior Surety Underwriter

Our client is one of the leading experts in guarantees in the European surety market. The core focus is on guarantees with a team of highly qualified industry experts and analysts to serve their clients with customized solutions. Our client is looking for a well-organized and motivated Senior Surety Underwriter to join the Spanish guarantee team located in Malaga.

Key responsibilities and tasks:

• Strategy:
  • Assist in developing the client brand in the Spanish market
  • Develop relationships with government and private industry stakeholders in our relevant sectors
  • Define, together with the Country Manager, the strategy and tactics for the sustainable growth of the company in Spain
• Underwriting and Credit Assessments:
  • Gather all relevant underwriting information, financial reports, and market research to form a credit opinion
  • Research and analyze economic trends and data relating to our related industries
  • Assess financial, economic, and technical risks related to client projects or relevant contracts
  • Prepare financial models, risk reviews, and underwriting submissions for new and existing client facilities, as well as make commercial/risk recommendations
  • Present credit opinions to the Underwriting Committee in English
• Keeping up-to-date with:
  • Local and select international market developments
  • Local and select international regulation, legislation, and accounting standards that can affect the industries we support and subsequently our clients' ability to perform
  • Changes in the local and international macro-economic environment
• Management:
  • Adherence to Underwriting Guidelines and follow risk appetite policies
  • Prepare and maintain internal management reports as required
  • Develop an annual market and portfolio plan
  • Develop the budget for the designated portfolio
  • Develop pricing philosophy and fee strategy
• Administration and Systems:
  • General administration, customer service, daily workflow management, and updating the Surety database with respect to all client facilities, security, requests, and maintenance
  • Draft new security documents, as well as the maintenance of existing security documents
• People Development:
  • Ongoing training and leadership development as a Senior Underwriter towards becoming an experienced member of the team

Skills and experience:

• Experience dealing with customers/brokers and providing high-quality service
• Experience working at Senior Management, C-Suite, or Director level
• Strong communication, listening, and negotiation skills (both verbal and written)
• Excellent communication and presentation skills in English and Spanish needed to interact effectively with internal and external parties at a Senior Management/Director level
• Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team context
• Demonstrated knowledge of financial statement analysis
• Attention to detail with respect to financial analysis, credit paper writing, and facility/security documentation
• Sound business acumen and problem-solving to make commercial decisions within delegated authority and recommendations to credit decision-makers as required
• Well-organized and flexible to manage various conflicting business priorities
